Until I moved to Indiana, I had never been to a State Fair before. In fact, when I came out to visit for a job interview, one of the places that my future employers took me was to the State Fair! It was hot, it was crowded, it was wonderful! My only fair experience was the local county fair, which was a lot bigger than the county fairs in Indiana, but that’s because our state fair is about a 10 hour drive from where we live, so we HAD to do it up well on the local level.
The county fairs in Indiana are so much fun and they have a component that I only witnessed when we went to visit my grandparents in Virginia; the demolition derby and tractor pulls! Of course there’s the midway, the fantastic fried food and lemon shake ups, the occasional fireworks show, the animals, the photography, the art and the other randomness that is the county fair but I’m still the most fascinated with the demo derby and the tractor pulls.
One of the best things is that most if not all of the county fairs offer free general admission and parking (although you might find that some events such as the tractor pulls and demolition derbys charge admission).
