Agape Performing Arts Company is pleased to present one of the only stagings of Les Misérables in the Midwest in 2017. Under the direction of Dr. Kathleen Phipps, the production will include a cast of 69 students ages 9-18 culled from a 10 county area and an audition process of 90+ students. This casting includes four members of the 2017 Indiana All-State Honor Choir (high school), as well as members who have performed with several major area theatres, including Footlight and IRT. The crew is also led by talented young people who ill be running the spotlights, working the sound board, and stage managing the production. This production is the School Edition , with a running time of around two hours.
By choosing to stage Les Mis at McGowan Hall, Agape is helping to raise awareness and finances one of the Old Northside’s social hubs from the 1920s. McGowan Hall’s theatre space has been the home of numerous plays, dances and other social events in the 1920s, but gradually faded to a primary use of party rental space The production venue, McGowan Hall, is the home of the Mater Dei Council of the Knights of Columbus. The Knights are partnering with Agape Performing Arts Company to bring this production to the stage in an effort to provide greater cultural opportunities on the near north side of downtown Indianapolis.
As an all-volunteer company with a focus on building kids, Agape launched in June 2016 with a double cast of 50 in Into the Woods Jr., performed both at Our Lady of Greenwood Church and Roncalli High School. A second production in November, Sing Down the Moon: Appalachian Wonder Tales, included a cast of 29, and was fully directed by teams of teenage directors who were students of Dr. Phipps. Some graduates of Dr. Phipps’ programs are preparing for professional careers in theatre and film.
