Two Queensland koalas on loan from the San Diego Zoo will make their home for a limited time in the Indianapolis Zoo’s Forest area, in the newly renovated (former) Bat Exhibit.
You may have heard Koalas referred to as bears but they are actually members of the marsupial family along with kangaroos and wallabies. Our friends at the Indianapolis Zoo tell us: “Koalas, which are native to Australia, are nocturnal and like to doze for up to 20 hours each day, tucked among the branches of their favorite eucalyptus trees. At night, koalas will nibble on tender eucalyptus leaves and can eat about 1.5 pounds of leaves each day. Although koalas are not considered an endangered species, they face threats from habitat loss as once dense forest areas are developed for growing human populations.”
Indianapolis Zoo guests can experience Koala presented by Citizens Energy Group from May 23-Sept. 7. There will be special Members Only preview days on May 21-22.
