Garfield Park Conservatory & Sunken Garden

Lulu and I took a little field trip to Garfield Park (2505 ConservatoryDrive)
today. We discovered that Garfield Park is HUGE (136 acres) and has so much to offer to Indianapolis families but we were most interested in the Sunken Garden and Conservatory.

The Sunken Garden offers free admission to the public and is open from 10am – 9pm during Summer Hours (April 23rd – October 10th) and from 10am – 5pm during Winter Hours (October 11th – April 22nd). The garden is used for weddings and concerts throughout the nicer parts of the year, but don’t expect to take your family pictures there unless you have a paid for permit to do so.

In the gardens we saw about a dozen varieties of flowers with pretty colors and designs. We spotted flower bed growing in different shapes and we watched the water fountains spray water in the air. There were very few people in the garden during our visit so it was peaceful and quiet. The pathways in the garden were stroller friendly but scooters, bikes and skates are not welcome at the Sunken Garden.

After our walk in the garden we walked up to the north entrance of the Conservatory and paid the $1 admission fee so that we could walk around inside. Lulu was delighted to see a snake and other creatures on display at the entrance as well as part way through the building. There were waterfalls and ponds with giant fish in them!

This was such a great opportunity to see some beautiful plants that we will never find in our own gardens. The colors were different and the smells were amazing! There are signs and labels throughout the conservatory so that your children can learn where the plants typically grow and what they are called. Just wait until you learn about our two favorite plants: the chocolate tree and the vanilla ice cream tree!

The conservatory is open Monday – Saturday from 10am to 5pm and on Sundays from 1pm to 5pm. Tours are offered on Saturdays June through August at 2:30pm. There are MANY, MANY programs offered for families, children and individuals. Some are free and some carry a small fee. I recommend you take full advantage of these programs!
