Tulip Bulb Digging Day at Garfield Park Sunken Garden

10 Things You Need to Know & How to Get on the List

If you haven’t seen the tulip garden display at the Sunken Garden at Garfield Park you are missing out! It’s a beautiful and colorful sight to take in.

At the end of the tulip season, when all of the petals have fallen, the tulips must come out so that the new summer flowers can be planted for guests to enjoy. Every spring, the Sunken Gardens will be open one morning and the community can come and dig up the tulips and their bulbs to take home and plant in their own gardens! The best part? It’s only a $5 donation (so new bulbs can be purchased for the next year).

3. Tulip digging will take place rain or shine (except severe weather).

4. Tulips are available first come, first serve and there is no maximum. You can take as many as you like!

5. You must bring all of your own tools and equipment and ways to take the tulips home – oh, and they can get heavy VERY quickly!

6. Children are welcome and invited! Get dirty, dig in the soil and enjoy the outdoors together…then take it home!

8. Volunteers/staff are available to answer any questions you have about re-planting the tulips.

9. Things you will likely need to bring: gloves, heavy-duty trash bags, 5 gallon buckets, shovels/garden spades, and brooms. We bring our wagons and a trash can on wheels! BUT don’t over fill, they get heavy!

10. Have fun! Enjoy! It’s a popular event but I’ve always, always taken home plenty of tulips and could have take more if I needed them. My friends love to have me over after the tulip dig!
