Carmel Clay Schools announced their plan for the hybrid model of in-person learning Middle School Students. Middle School students will begin school on Wednesday, August 19 for both the virtual and hybrid option. Carmel High School and all elementary schools will begin on Thursday, August 13, 2020. This change was made to accommodate a switch from traditional in-person learning to the hybrid model. A virtual option was also available to students.
Carmel Clay was the second Hamilton county school system to incorporate a hybrid model into their reopening plans. However, originally they hoped to reopen on August 11 with hybrid in-person and virtual options only for high school students. The school corporation later extended this hybrid model to the middle schools with concerns about capacity. Elementary families could opt for 100% in-person or 100% virtual instruction. This school corporation is the second Hamilton county school system that we’ve seen incorporate a hybrid model into their reopening plans.
Middle School Orientation
Orientation programs for students in both the Virtual and Hybrid options will be on Thursday August 13; Friday, August 14; Monday, August 17; and Tuesday, August 18. Families will receive an email with details and a link to schedule a one hour block for orientation on any of these days. Drive-through times will be made available for families not comfortable with entering the building. Information about these drive-through events will come from your school.
What to Expect During Orientation
Groups of 20 students will attend each orientation session and face coverings with social distancing will be required. During orientation, students will be issued a Chromebook, update their passwords, and receive training on the educational software. There will also be a parent session held during this time. Each family will have time to find their lockers and walk their schedules.
More about Carmel Clay Schools Reopening Plan
Elementary parents had the option of selecting in-person or virtual learning for their children. All of the following plans are fluid and can change if conditions change. In-person instruction for grades K-5 will take place five days each week in person (or as the school calendar dictates).
Carmel High School is also doing a Hybrid/Blended in-person/virtual learning option for students in grades 9-12. Students will be split into two cohort groups and attend school in-person and virtually on alternating days. Approximately ½ of the student body will attend each day. Students will be expected to follow safety recommendations on “in-person” days explained within the plan.
Carmel Clay Schools Virtual Learning
Carmel students will also be able to attend school via two virtual models. One is a synchronous method where students participate in live virtual instruction in real time. The Asynchronous model allows the student to participate in recorded lessons at the time of day they choose. Virtual learning will be six hours each day. Parents/Students must commit for an entire semester.
Extracurricular Activities & Athletics
At this time IHSAA rules indicate that students must be enrolled as a full-time, in-person student in order to be eligible for athletics. A Virtual learning student will be ineligible to participate in athletics (unless the virtual experience is mandated by Carmel Clay Schools). Carmel Clay High School students are eligible to participate with the hybrid schedule even if their cohort does not have in-person class on that specific day.
