This years Maple Syrup Days take place on March 5th & March 12th. The maple trees produce a sweet treasure throughout the winter months: sap with a high sugar content. Once the daytime temperatures start rising, the sap starts flowing, and sap can be collected and boiled down into 100% all-natural maple syrup!
How do we know which trees to use? How do we collect the sap? Do the sugar maple trees die afterwards? How do we turn that natural sweetness into syrup? How is maple syrup different from the syrup you buy in plastic bottles at the grocery store? How has maple syrup been made in the past?
If any of these questions have crossed your mind or your kids’ minds, grab your favorite flannel and head on out to McCloud Nature Park in early March to experience the 12th Annual McCloud Maple Syrup Days! Bring the whole family because Maple Syrup Days are FREE to attend!
Here is a checklist of things you can do during either of these days:
* Carry a yoke with buckets like the early pioneers did to collect sap.
* Tap a tree yourself.
* Find ways to identify trees in the winter.
* Learn how Native Americans first made maple syrup and how colonial Americans advanced the process.
* Visit the “Sugar Shack”, where our modern-day evaporator will be condensing hundreds of gallons of sugary sap into sweet, rich maple syrup.
* Purchase 100% natural maple syrup from Harris Sugar Bush who will be on-site 8 am-1 pm both days.
This event is FREE to attend, appropriate for all ages, and no advance registration is required. Check the Facebook event for details.
