Pottery Barn Storytime

By Michael Lombardi

You probably know that one of the best things you can do for your kid to give them an edge in life is by reading to them. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends reading aloud daily from the start*. And because reading is often a solitary activity, it’s important to remember there are opportunities to socialize around reading in public. It was with that in mind that I recently headed to Story Time at Pottery Barn Kids inside The Fashion Mall at Keystone.

Every Tuesday morning at 11 am, the only Pottery Barn Kids store in the state hosts parents and children for a story. For my trip, the story was about Bear and a toy bunny from the highly rated book Found, which was published just last year and written by Salina Yoon.

About a dozen moms with infant-filled strollers sat in a haphazard crescent of beds and chairs with some toddlers along for the story too. At the center of focus, an employee sat in a swivel chair so that she could hold the book up. She was diligent in making sure everyone got to see each page as she read about Bear who searched high and low for the owner of the plush bunny he found in the forest.

After the conclusion of the story, everyone was given a stamp in a Book Club Passport provided by the store. Since this was the first time my daughter and I have attended, I was given a passport emblazoned with Book Club Official Member on the front as well as my first stamp. I was told that after attending story time on 5 occasions my completed passport filled with stamps could be exchanged in-store for a discount.

Afterwards, a handful of kids hung around and played in the store and the moms socialized or browsed the store. My daughter headed straight for the play kitchen, which is one of her favorites. She also found a wooden ambulance along with a police car and the Batmobile. Her favorite toy, though, was the play tool bench. She has been wanting one for a while, so it was nice she got to play with the tool bench.
