Indy Reads Books | Used Bookstore

If you’re looking for adorable children’s bookstores in Indianapolis, we can help with that. Add Indy Reads to your must-visit list!

Indy Reads Used Bookstore on Mass Ave

The open feeling of Indy Reads Books is welcoming in itself but the beautifully arranged shelves full of books that hold stories to be enjoyed create a warmth that flows through the shop. Adults step in and peruse the shelves that act as a temporary home to the perfectly bound treasure chests of words. Small nooks are scattered throughout, perfect for reading alone, gathering with a friend or two, or pulling a small child upon your lap to share a story.

Indianapolis Independent Bookstore

Children flitter back and forth between the books, arranged in a rainbow of color. A chess game begins in the center of the store, and the local Paws to Read organization members arrive with Mayla, the certified reading therapy dog — this causes great excitement as children clamor for their turn to read to the pup and show her pictures in their favorite books.

Tucked away on Massachusetts Avenue, Indy Reads Books is brimming with special programming, a steal of a deal on their $1 used children’s books, and a community of people who love books and love reading. In fact, this community understands the gift of literacy so well that they exist to raise money for the nonprofit organization Indy Reads, whose mission is to promote and improve the literacy of adults and families in Central Indiana.

Family-Friendly Events at Indy Reads Books

In addition to running a bookstore, Indy Reads Books also runs a diverse social schedule that is fantastic for families looking for fun (and usually free) activities. Check out the weekly all-ages chess club on Tuesday nights, Paws to Read Therapy Dog Visits (1st & 3rd Saturday mornings), Drag Queen Story Hour (select Saturday mornings), and many more events that are added to the calendar regularly.

Children’s Used Books for $1

Guests will find a variety of new and current book titles available at the suggested retail prices, but the hidden gems are the used books that are donated to the store. The children’s book titles are only $1 each and my kids can’t help themselves when they see the rainbow arrangement of the books, they want one of every color!

Indy Reads Books is located at 911 Massachusetts Avenue, directly across from Black Market. Each purchase you make goes directly toward assisting with literacy programs in the greater Indianapolis area. Location Info and Schedule. Indy Reads Books is a quick walk to Books & Brews where kids eat free on Sunday, the Macaroon Bar (perfect for dessert and children’s cooking classes), Sub Zero Ice Cream, and many other family-friendly venues.

Family Volunteering and Donations

Indianapolis families can volunteer with kids by applying online, attending an orientation/training, and then signing up to help. Volunteers are needed to greet people, stock shelves, set up for events, alphabetize books, and more! Indy Reads Books accepts used book donations.
