Krystyne and Kirt Wilson didn’t just dream up the concept for a Sweet Peas Play Cafe in Kokomo. When they were living in South Korea, they experienced a wonderful play cafe where children and caregivers both felt happy and satisfied with their experience — the kids could play safely and the parents relaxed and were in community with other adults around them. Krystyne and Kirt dreamed of bringing this concept to Indiana until now — this month the dream is a reality.
When we stepped in to the Sweet Peas Play Cafe, I felt right at home, and my kids obviously did too because they started playing with everything! This clean, bright and airy space will call to your kids from the moment you walk in the door.
When you visit Sweet Peas in Kokomo, the biggest difference between this play cafe and others is the range of ages that are welcome. There are spaces designed for little ones to enjoy and other spaces and activities for elementary aged children as well (up to age 12). The goal is for Sweet Peas to be that place that people love to gather and be together as families, as neighbors and as a community. All 3,500 square feet have been designed with safety and community in mind.
Preschool and Toddler Play Area
There’s a fun indoor playground with slides and stairs and bridges and little places to hide and seek. You’ll see fun playhouses that are filled with themed toys to match the building — the car repair shop has ride-on cars, gas pumps and a complete auto shop with tools and parts to make those fun car repairs. The grocery store is well stocked with play food and shopping carts. The bank has a safe and cash registers and cold, hard “cash”.
School Age Children Play Area
On the older kid side of Sweet Peas, there’s an arts and crafts playhouse with craft supplies that will keep your kids busy for hours. The building playhouse, sponsored by a local orthodontist, has construction and building toys like LEGO bricks, a giant LEGO wall, Magformers and other fun STEAM toys. Another playhouse has a dreamy play kitchen set and right outside of the playhouse, there’s a fabulously furnished doll house.
Both play areas have a high-tech, interactive BEAM floor projection game system. The littlest kids will enjoy the simple games and older kids can participate in the more challenging games. No matter which age group your kids fall under, they’ll enjoy playing at Sweet Peas Play Cafe in Kokomo.
Baby Play Area
The baby play area is a special space in the young children’s area. It’s enclosed with shelving full of fun toys for the littlest kiddos. The soft, padded floor is great for tummy time, tiny ones who are learning to crawl or walk and their caregivers. A collection of musical toys and bright, colorful age appropriate toys are available for entertaining and playing with the babies.
