I love yoga. I love the way I feel mentally and physically after each class, which is why I was immediately intrigued when I heard about Yoga for Kids. I pictured my almost three and a half year old holding Warrior 1 like a pro, practicing his Sun Salutations, and eventually mastering a longer plank than me…but was pleasantly surprised that the class was quite a bit more child centered, without losing the key characteristics of traditional yoga.
The class takes place on Saturday mornings from 10:30-11:15 at BodyLife 360 in Carmel (622 S. Rangeline Rd, Unit U; 317-688-9160) and taught by pediatric physical therapists Heather Smith and Miranda Vogel. Classes are geared for children ages 2-7, but all ages are welcome – and it was perfect for my 3.5 year old.
We brought our mats, removed our shoes, and began a few fun breathing exercises that helped bring awareness to our bodies. The next 45 minutes kept my child captivated with themed activities (we got to be turkeys and waddle across the room!) and songs that allowed my child to stretch and move, while I performed familiar yoga moves alongside him.
The time moved quickly and Heather had great rapport with the children. When we left, and I cannot make this up, my son said “I love yoga!” I asked our instructor what she felt the value of taking this course was for children and she replied, “Yoga for Kids is completely different from competitive sports, but still physical fitness. It’s a great family activity that allows the parent and child to participate together.” She also noted that this early balance and body awareness would help with later team sports, should afamily decide to sign their child up later in life.
Yoga for Kids costs $48 for 4 classes (Saturdays, 10:30-11:15; on sale $40 for 4 classes until 12/31/14) and is a worthwhile activity to help your child gain self-confidence, body awareness, and experience quality time with a parent.
