Carmel Clay Parks and Recreation offers programming to fit the course needs for local homeschool families. Find your favorite activity in the program guide or select from programs designed specifically for homeschool families. Homeschool Archery, Discovering Nature, Homeschool Gym, and Homeschool Intro the Theatre are just a few of the offerings.

September 3: Homeschool Tuesdays: Felrath Hines- Connecting Art & Geometry

10 am-Noon
Indiana State Museum

Dive into a world of investigation and discovery during these two-hour classes designed to stimulate a child’s interest in science, art, history and culture. This month, discover what art and geometry have in common while exploring It’s About Time: The Artwork of Felrath Hines, then create a masterpiece of your very own.  This class is recommended for ages 6-13.  Tickets are required. September 3: Homeschool Explorers

Homeschool families of all ages are invited to learn about Library resources and new discovery skills while participating in fun theme-based activities.

September 4: Bird Walk

8-10 am
Nina Mason Pulliam EcoLab, 3200 Cold Spring Road, Indianapolis 46222

The Nina Mason Pulliam EcoLab is a wonderful place to bird watch, with over 165 different species sightings being recorded since 2002. No experience is necessary, and the hike will be led by one of the bird experts at Marian. The only things that are necessary are binoculars and a little bit of patience! Meet at the St. Francis statue just west of the Allison Mansion on the Marian campus at 8 am every Wednesday starting August 28th and ending the week before Thanksgiving. Bring water to drink and wear comfortable shoes. No reservation is required.

September 5: Homeschool Art Session

During this six-week course, students will become familiar with the concepts of art and develop creative problem solving skills they can apply anywhere.  All supplies are included in registration. Registration is required and the program is recommended for ages 6-14. Register by calling (317) 255- 2464.

September 6: Hoppy Hours

Skyzone opens early every Friday for jumpers of all ages and offers a discounted rate of $10 for one hour of jump time!

September 11: Homeschool Day

Explore the variety of learning opportunities Conner Prairie has to offer in our seven historic areas. You might take on a role in Prairietown by using our Adventure Guide and Achievement Cards, link history with hands-on science in our Create.Connect gallery, and experience Indiana’s brush with the Civil War at 1863 Civil War Journey. Also be sure to explore the Conner House, and take a journey out to Treetop Outpost.

$6 per student, $8.50 per chaperone, free for primary educator.

September 11: Newfields Homeschool Open Studio

Looking for new ways to learn about art? Expand your family’s creativity by exploring a variety of art-making materials in Newfields Homeschool Open Studio sessions. Instructor will provide advice to make curriculum connections and stimulate imaginations. Registration required in advance. $10 Members/ $15 Public.

September 12: Ready, Set, Score!

10-11:30 am or 1-2:30 pm
The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis, Welcome Center

Suit up and be ready on the sidelines!  The Coach is calling you in! In this homeschool class, students will practice math strategies, learn about the history of American Football in Indianapolis and beyond, experience art through the sport, and use their creativity to design their very own team! Recommended age is 6+ with accompanying adult. Advance tickets are required.

September 13: Homeschool Skate

September 14: Homeschool Fair

Homeschooling parents, families, students, and all those interested in learning more are invited to the first IndyPL homeschool family conference and information fair.  IndyPL, Indiana State Library, IAHE, WFYI, Kids INK, and experienced homeschooling parents will present panels, resources, research, and hands-on STEM activities.  

September 16: STEAMPunks: CSI- Crime Scene Investigation

1-2 pm

A Crime has been committed at the library!  Police are asking for help in photographing evidence, but first we have to fins it.  Join us for this scavenger hunt activity around the Fishers Library. Please bring a camera phone or iPad, if possible. For ages 9-13. No registration required.

September 17: Homeschool Hikers

1-2 pm
Cool Creek Nature Center, 2000-1 E 151st Street, Carmel 46033

Plan a break from the books to learn about nature and get outside, We will discuss a nature topic, followed by exploring the woods and prairie. Pre-registration is preferred. You can register by calling (317) 774-2500.

September 21: Nightfall with Edgar Allen Poe

1 pm or 3 pm
The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis, Lilly Theater

Edgar Allan Poe stands alone in the flickering darkness of his mind, trying desperately to convince himself — and us — that he’s not mad. The spell he weaves brings us a highly theatrical aerial adaptation of four tales Poe himself considered his best: “The Raven,” “The Fall of the House of Usher,” “The Pit and the Pendulum,” and “The Tell-Tale Heart.” Enter the world of Poe and check your heartbeat at the door. This program is suggested for grades 5-8 and is included in regular museum admission.  You will need to get separate theater tickets from the concierge desk (downstairs.) Additional performances are at 1 pm and 3 pm on September 22, 28, and 29.

September 21: Free Museum Day

Smithsonian magazine has designated Saturday, September 21, 2019 as the 15th annual Museum Day, an initiative in which participating museums across the United States open their doors for free to those who download a branded ticket. This year, Museum Day will celebrate the Smithsonian Year of Music. Music is not only a reflection of human creativity and innovation, but also a key method of communication and cross-cultural exchange and understanding. 

September 24: Random Fandom: Harry Potter

Celebrate your fandom! Every month we will explore the realms of a different fandom! From Avengers to Doctor Who, to K-Pop and Pokémon, we will geek out together in an open and accepting evening of fun. Cosplaying is encouraged but not required. For grades 6-12. No registration required.

September 25: Homeschool Hangout (Fishers)

Calling all homeschoolers! Join us at the Fishers Library and play games, make crafts and build things with other homeschoolers. All supplies are provided… just bring your imagination! Geared for ages 5-13.
