Where to Watch Sports in Indy

I wasn’t much into sports until I met my husband 14 years ago. Now sports are certainly part of my life, whether playing alongside our kids or as a spectator. Tommy, at age 6, is really starting to understand (and play) team sports. Lily, at age 3, might not understand the rules but she certainty enjoys the fun! This summer, we’re excited to take advantage of the sporting teams and events that Indy has to offer!

Motor Sports

Although not a traditional sporting team, I have to mention one of our family’s favorite sporting events, motor sports and racing. The Indianapolis Motor Speedway is full of events this month and of course the world famous Indianapolis 500 race is Sunday, May 24th. For the last two years, we have gone to Carb Day with the kids (May 22 this year, adult tickets are $30) and they loved it!

From the IMS website: Children 12 and under will receive free General Admission to any IMS event in 2015 when accompanied by an adult General Admission ticket holder. Any individual, regardless of age, must have a ticket for a Reserved Seating area.

Later in the summer, there is the Brickyard Vintage Racing Invitational (Saturday, June 13), the Crown Royal 400 (Sunday, July 26) and the Red Bull Indianapolis GP (Sunday, August 9). Check the IMS website for complete schedule and ticket prices.

Another favorite of ours are the Indianapolis Indians baseball team. Be sure to check the schedule for games and times. Tickets start at only $10. If you sign up for the Knot Hole, children 14 and under can attend all 72 home games for a one-time fee of only $16 for a lawn or reserved seat, and the price also includes a t-shirt!

All summer long you can find our Indy Eleven soccer team playing at Carroll Stadium at IUPUI. Tickets start at $10 and kids under 2 are free (lap only).

My husband always goes through football withdraw during the height of the summer (we are Purdue and Colts football fans at our house). But you don’t have to wait until late summer to see some football! Our minor league football team, the Indianapolis Tornados, play several games throughout the summer at Arsenal Tech High School. Be sure to check the schedule for details; the next game is the evening of May 16th!   Tickets are $10 for adults and kids under 12 are free!

All summer long families can catch an Indiana Fever game! Tickets start at $21. July 8th is the annual kids day. Please check the website for the schedule.

If you’re into cycling, the Mass Ave Criterion is the place to be. This is an all day, one-day event taking place on Saturday, August 1st and is not to be missed. There are several kid-oriented events to take part in but it is free to observe the race and events. Check out the schedule for full details on this all day event!

Most of the sporting events at IUPUI are on summer hiatus but save the date for the IUPUI Regatta, a canoe race on the downtown Canal. This event takes place once kids are back in school, but is on a weekend, on Saturday, September 19. This event is free to attend and is sure to attract a large crowd!

If there are any other summer sporting teams that you know about, please let IWK know so we can share those with our readers!
