Rich in history and the most terrific natural views, Morgan County offers great hiking and biking for all skill levels. While advanced cyclists and hikers can push their skills to the limit, there are some many breathtaking opportunities for hiking and biking as a family in Morgan County.
Old Town Waverly Park
Old Town Waverly Park in Morgan County, Indiana has an opportunity to be the jewel in a chain of potential park spaces along the White River. At one time, this park site’s history included a bid to being the state capital. At its high point, it was a landing along the canal which fed three different mills. At its low point in 2008, flooding destroyed the last community to call historic Waverly home. The county parks aim to restore the functions of the floodplain, protect the remaining historic resources, and create abiding features that will remind us of what has come to pass on this site. Old Town Waverly Park in Morgan County educates about our built and natural worlds, and it is a place for the community to connect to the environments of the past, present, and future.
White River Greenway Trail
There is something special about walking along the river and the White River Greenway Trail is two miles of easy walking along the White River. The path is entirely paved, starting with Old Town Waverly Park. Amazing views, fishing, picnic areas, and access to a sandbar make this hike a new experience every time you come to visit. You might even be lucky enough to catch a glimpse of the eagles nesting on the other side of the river!
Burkhart Creek Park
Burkhart Creek Park was created when the Indiana Department of Natural Resources donated 83 acres of land to create this beautiful natural wetland park. Burkhart Creek offers hiking trails, shelter houses, and a gorgeous native wetland. The trails are mostly level, with a few steep trails for the advanced hiker.
Landersdale Trail
Great for biking and walking, the Landersdale Trail is a solid surface trail that follows Landersdale Road in Mooresville. Parking for the trail is located at 500 E Landersdale Lane, or at the Mooresville High School Soccer Complex. There are no public bathroom facilities along the trail.
Morgan-Monroe State Forest
This state forest encompasses over 25,000 acres, and encompasses some of Indiana’s finest trails. There are several loop trails available ranging from an easy .5 mile trail, to a rugged hard 40 mile trail! Please note there is no cycling allowed on the trails, however, there are several ADA-compliant trails available for accessibility.
