ComedySportz Indianapolis: A Fun and Unexpected Night Out with Kids, Teens and Friends

There comes a point when older kids are ready to add new kinds of experiences to their list. They want something fun, memorable, and a little unexpected—something they can enjoy with their friends and laugh about together on the way home.

For my daughter’s birthday, I took her and a group of friends, ages 12 to 14, to ComedySportz Indianapolis at The Wit Theater. Let me tell you, this was a hit.

It was funny. It was affordable. It was different from the usual birthday outing. And most importantly, the kids were completely into it.

What Is ComedySportz Indianapolis?

Despite the name, ComedySportz is not a comedy show about sports. You do not need to understand football stats, know basketball rules, or have any athletic ability beyond raising your hand and clapping loudly.

ComedySportz is live improv comedy presented like a competition. Two teams of performers compete in fast-paced comedy games, making up scenes, songs, and characters on the spot. A referee keeps the show moving, the audience gives suggestions, and everyone gets to vote for the winning team.

It is a little like watching Whose Line Is It Anyway? live, except your child might be the person shouting out the idea that becomes the next ridiculous scene.

The all-ages ComedySportz shows are designed to be family-friendly, and the average match runs about 90 minutes. Current all-ages shows are listed on the ComedySportz Indianapolis website for Friday evenings and Saturday afternoons at The Wit Theater.

Why ComedySportz Was So Great for Tweens and Young Teens

Planning an activity for kids in the 12-to-14-year-old age range can be tricky. They are old enough to have opinions, and young enough that a lot of traditional evening entertainment is not really made for them.

ComedySportz hit a sweet spot.

The kids were old enough to understand the humor and appreciate how clever the performers were, but the show was still silly, energetic, and interactive enough to keep them laughing the entire time. They were not staring at their phones. They were not sitting quietly, wishing we had planned something else. They were watching, laughing, voting, and throwing out suggestions.

There is a lot of audience participation, but not in a terrifying “someone is going to drag me onstage against my will” kind of way. The performers ask for ideas and sometimes volunteers, but the venue says no one is forced to participate. That makes it easy for outgoing kids to jump into the fun while quieter kids can enjoy the show from their seats.

As a mom, I loved watching the girls loosen up and laugh together. It felt like an experience, not just somewhere we went because we needed a place to put a birthday cake.

A Birthday Party That Did Not Feel Predictable

I love a good birthday party venue, but by the tween years, many kids have already attended the same types of parties several times. Bowling, skating, trampoline parks, and arcade parties are all great, but sometimes it is fun to surprise them with something totally different.

A birthday party at ComedySportz feels special because the show becomes part of the memory. The kids are not just doing an activity next to each other. They are experiencing the same ridiculous moments together, laughing at the same unexpected jokes, and probably repeating their favorite parts in the car afterward.

Our birthday group had a fantastic time, and it was nice to plan an outing that felt exciting without requiring an elaborate theme, a huge setup, or a massive party budget.

ComedySportz welcomes birthday groups and other celebrations, and groups of 10 or more can contact the Indianapolis box office for options. Tickets can be purchased online in advance, which is the best way to guarantee seats.

Not Just for Birthday Parties

One of my favorite things about ComedySportz is that it works for so many different kinds of outings.

I have taken a youth group there, and it was a perfect activity because everyone could enjoy it together. The show gives kids something fun to share without requiring them to already know each other well or be comfortable jumping into a competitive activity.

I have also been to ComedySportz for date night. It is such a refreshing change from the standard dinner-and-a-movie routine. You can grab food, laugh together, and leave with actual things to talk about besides whether or not you liked the movie.

And yes, I have been with friends for a girls’ night, too. Sometimes grown-ups need an evening where the whole point is simply to laugh until your face hurts.

That is what makes ComedySportz such a good Indianapolis activity. It works for the birthday kid who wants something different. It works for parents trying to entertain tweens. It works for couples, friend groups, youth groups and families who want to find a new place to have fun together.

Food, Snacks, and Keeping the Evening Easy

Another parenting win: food and drinks are available at The Wit Theater. The menu includes casual options such as popcorn, soft pretzels, burgers, and chicken sandwiches, along with fountain drinks and adult beverages for grown-ups.

That means you can turn the show into a complete outing without trying to coordinate a separate dinner stop before or after. For a birthday group, that makes everything simpler. For a family night out, it means everyone can snack while they settle in for the show.

What Parents Should Know Before Going

The family-friendly ComedySportz matches are all-ages performances, but The Wit Theater also hosts late-night and adult-oriented shows, so be sure you are selecting the ComedySportz all-ages show when attending with kids.

Plan to purchase tickets ahead of time, especially when taking a birthday group or attending on a busy weekend. Shows run about 90 minutes, which was the perfect length for our group: long enough to feel like a full outing, but not so long that anyone lost interest.

Most importantly, be ready to participate a little. Cheer loudly. Encourage your kids to offer suggestions. Vote for your favorite team. The more the audience gets into it, the more fun the whole experience becomes.

Add ComedySportz to Your Indianapolis Family Fun List

ComedySportz Indianapolis is one of those experiences I wish more families knew about. It is interactive, funny, reasonably priced, and completely different from the typical weekend outing.

My daughter and her friends loved it for a birthday celebration. I have loved it with a youth group, for a date night, and during a girls’ night out. Every visit has been different because every show is created right there in the moment.

So, when your kids say they want to do something fun, but you cannot possibly handle one more predictable outing, take them to ComedySportz.

You may discover that the person laughing the loudest is you.
