For the past few years, I’ve been following along as the trend of overnighting in treehouses has become bigger and bigger. Sleeping overnight in the treetops has been on my road trip destination wish list.
Staying in treehouses in Mohican offers an enchanting escape from the ordinary, you’ll enjoy the comforts of modern living among the untamed beauty of nature. I’ve waited for Indiana to capitalize on the Treehouse Boom made popular by the “Treehouse Masters” television program, but so far I haven’t seen it happen. Ohio made it happen and in more than one location! In Mohican, Ohio, treehouse accommodations provide a unique way to experience the serenity and majesty of the great outdoors.

Treehouse Cabins at Mohican State Park
Nestled in the heart of Ohio’s vast woodlands, Mohican’s treehouses are not just accommodations; they are gateways to adventure and tranquility. The idea of sleeping amongst the branches, with leaves rustling and birds chirping, taps into childhood fantasies and a deep-rooted desire to connect with nature. These treehouses range from rustic to luxurious, offering something for every type of traveler seeking solace or adventure in the woods. At Mohican, you’ll stay in one of the nine gorgeous treehouses, two of which are designed by Pete Nelson, treehouse designer, and star of “Treehouse Masters.” The Little Red Treehouse is featured on the show.
Most treehouses sleep 2-4 people but you can find the occasional gem that will sleep a family of six. My mother-in-law and father-in-law booked two treehouses for our group of ten and we had so much fun!
Today’s treehouse accommodations are a far cry from the simple wooden platforms of childhood memories. Many of Mohican’s treehouses are equipped with modern amenities such as full kitchens, luxurious bathrooms, heating, and air conditioning, ensuring a comfortable stay without sacrificing the rustic charm of treehouse living. Some even feature hot tubs, fireplaces, and expansive decks, allowing guests to relax in comfort while surrounded by nature.
Most tree house cabins will have a sitting area, a sleeping area, and a kitchen area, sometimes all in one. If you’re lucky, your treehouse will have an indoor bathroom, but other locations offer an outdoor bathroom (think outhouse) or a shared bathroom shelter. Both of our treehouses had indoor bathrooms, including an indoor shower AND an outdoor shower. If your treehouse has an outdoor shower, I 100% recommend using it, it’s glorious!
Some treehouse rentals will have the typical treehouse features, such as swinging bridges or spiral stairs. Others have tire swings or other fun things to do.
Ohio Treehouse Rentals
There are several places in Ohio where you can rent treehouses for a glamping experience. The most popular destinations are Hocking Hills and the ones that we visited in Mohican. The most important factor in deciding where to rent a treehouse is deciding what you want to do during your stay.
Mohican State Park and the surrounding area are known for their breathtaking landscapes, from rolling hills and lush forests to the scenic Mohican River. Staying in a treehouse allows guests to immerse themselves in this natural beauty. Things to do Near Mohicans Treehouse Resort
Mohican is the canoe capital of Ohio and as soon as you arrive in town, you’ll know it. Dozens of liveries are set up along the river with tubing trips, kayaks, rafts, and canoe rentals. Mohican Adventures has a handful of river trips as well as Aerial Adventure courses, Mini-Golf, and Go-Kart race tracks.
Mohican State Park
Hiking is a must-do at Mohican State Park and a variety of trails are available. You can even find trails that are .2 miles long if you’re looking for a scenic view with a super short hike. You’ll find trails that take you to the lake, to the waterfalls, and along the river. The Gorge Overlook has incredible views.
Children and families might like creek stomping and exploring the river near the covered bridge. Wrap up your visit with a walk in the pedestrian area of the bridge and it’s a great day!
Things to do Near Mohican State Park
Adults can take advantage of several winery stops nearby. Sunny Slope Winery offers 50-cent wine tastings and has a sitting area where kids can play games and enjoy a scoop of ice cream or other snacks. Weekends offer live music and other events.
Check out local sites of interest like Landoll’s Mohican Castle. The gardens and grounds are a beautiful space to walk around and enjoy. Ask a staff member about the history of the property or even book a stay in one of the luxury hotel rooms. While you’re on-site, stop in and enjoy a meal at the family-friendly Copper Mug restaurant.
Places to Eat Near Mohican
In addition to the Copper Mug, there are several nearby kid-friendly restaurants. Trails End Restaurant, the local pizza dive has decent service and food options. Our favorite restaurant outing was to the Black Fork Bistro. The Black Fork Bistro had amazing service and the best food for most tastes. Their fresh salads, rich pasta selections, and delicious hamburgers are top quality in our book.
