My daughter Quinn is obsessed with Kangaroos. We play “Joeys” all the time, meaning she pretends to be a baby ‘roo and follows me around.
If you are interested in Kangaroos like us, get ready and get excited! The newest exhibit at the Indianapolis Zoo features red kangaroos and multiple species of cockatoos. The member preview is June 17 from 4-6pm. Kangaroo Crossing opens to zoo guests on June 18, 2022.
Kangaroo Crossing offers an opportunity to get up close and even touch the newest residents of the Indy Zoo. It’s like being in Australia, right here in Indianapolis.
You’ll walk into a large open area without fencing or other barriers. Kangaroos will roam freely in the space and unique birds fly overhead, greeting guests loudly. Walk the circular path throughout the Kangaroo Crossing area and if you’re lucky, a roo will hop right up to you and you can pet it! The best way to approach a Kangaroo is slowly from behind and gently pat the roo on the back, not the face or ears.
“Kangaroos are the largest land mammal native to Australia. The red kangaroo is just one of about 60 species of kangaroos and their smaller relatives (wallabies, bettongs, and potoroos) found in Australia. Many of those other relative species are now threatened or extinct. In the Zoo’s open-air habitat, guests will have a perfect opportunity to snap a selfie from just feet away from red kangaroos and cockatoos while learning about the threats these species face in the wild.” – Indianapolis Zoo
Kangaroo Crossing is located where the MISTery Park with the sloths used to reside. The sloths are now a part of a paid experience through the Animal Adventure Program at the Indianapolis Zoo.
