Description

Join local birder Olivia Bautch for an evening of birding for everybody! Evenings are a special time to observe many birds as they become active before roosting for the night. The prairie on the west side of Eagle Creek Park is the perfect habitat for many elusive species such as Henslow’s Sparrow and Blue Grosbeaks, as well as fan-favorites like Red-headed Woodpecker and warblers. This outing is open to all ages and all levels of birders! Ten people maximum, FREE with West Side gate admission ($6), but pre-registration is required.

This accessible outing will take place on the Eagle’s Crest one-mile ADA Loop Trail and will last one hour. We will travel at a slow pace, with many opportunities to stop and enjoy the birds. We will remain within the first .3 miles of the loop, but both pace and distance can be adjusted based on the group’s needs. Van-accessible parking and one chair-accessible portable restroom is available near the trailhead. Binoculars will be available for loan; please bring all other gear and aids necessary to enjoy this outing.

The Eagle’s Crest location is less populated and noisier than most of the park, and an evening outing will allow for observation of active birds without the overwhelm of a dawn chorus. There is a clear line of sight throughout the loop. The outing is also scheduled for the evening to minimize exposure to heat, humidity, and peak sunlight. We will explore a grassland, so please bring any hats, sunglasses or other necessary gear. For detailed information on the trail accessibility, please visit the Birdability Site Review linked here.

Please feel free to reach out with any specific accommodation needs you have! Call the Ornithology Center at 317-327-2473 or email Olivia at falcon_515@outlook.com

This program is part of the 8th Annual Birding Festival, which will take place at Eagle Creek Park on Saturday, May 10, and Sunday, May 11. Search “Bird Fest” for the full schedule!
