Creating Communities of Belonging for Medically Complex Kids

At Indy with Kids, we’re always searching for ways to connect families with resources and opportunities to make life better—and more fun—for kids across Indiana. That’s why we’re thrilled to highlight the incredible work Tendercare is doing to ensure that children with complex medical needs are not only cared for but also included in their communities.

For over 30 years, Tendercare has been a trusted name in home healthcare, providing skilled nursing care for kids with medical complexities. But Tendercare is more than just a healthcare provider—it’s a community builder. Their work goes beyond the home, advocating for inclusive opportunities where all children, regardless of ability, can thrive.

Their mission is both heartfelt and urgent. Too many families face the heartbreaking challenge of navigating institutional care because they can’t access the in-home support they need to bring their child home. Tendercare is working to change that. They’ve built long-term, life-changing relationships between nurses and families—relationships that last far beyond medical appointments. In one heartwarming example, a Tendercare patient even served as the ring bearer in his nurse’s wedding!

Recently, Tendercare has been doubling down on its efforts to build inclusive communities for kids with disabilities. They’ve partnered with us at Indy with Kids to explore a critical question: how can families know if local events and activities are accessible to children with complex medical needs?

When Tendercare surveyed the resources and events we share—pumpkin patches, sensory-friendly museum nights, park outings, zoo days—they noticed something important. While these activities are designed to bring families together, there’s often a lack of information about accessibility for kids with disabilities. This gap led to a powerful collaboration between Tendercare, Indy with Kids, and event organizers across the state.

Together, we’re working to help organizations improve accessibility at their events and to provide families with the information they need to plan outings with confidence. Whether it’s ensuring a pumpkin patch can accommodate mobility devices or highlighting sensory-friendly zoo events, this partnership is about breaking down barriers and creating opportunities for medically complex kids to simply be kids.

The children Tendercare supports are remarkable—determined, curious, and full of life. They love music, books, and the same mischief and magic every child enjoys. They also live with trachs, vents, g-tubes, and other medical equipment that can make community outings a challenge. By collaborating with Tendercare, we’re helping families discover accessible spaces where their children can live, laugh, and play alongside their peers.

We’re proud to partner with Tendercare to foster a more inclusive Indiana. Together, we’re ensuring that every child—regardless of ability—has the chance to participate fully in the vibrant communities we call home.
