Tucked away in Northern Indiana’s Amish Country, this small town feels worlds apart from the daily rush of life. Families who visit in the fall will find slower rhythms, vibrant autumn backdrops, hearty comfort food, and unique attractions that appeal to both kids and adults. It’s a great fall break road trip.
On a recent trip, I had the chance to explore Shipshewana with my family of six. In just two days, we packed in plenty of memories without the stress of overscheduling. Whether you’re planning a weekend getaway or just a day trip, here’s your guide to the best things to do, where to stay, and what to eat in Shipshewana this season.
Start with the Straw Bale Art Trail
Each fall, Shipshewana hosts one of its most creative seasonal traditions: the Straw Bale Art Trail. Local businesses and artists come together to transform ordinary straw bales into extraordinary works of art. You’ll find everything from colorful animals to whimsical characters, each designed with incredible detail and imagination.
Families can grab a map and set out to find these creations, many of which are walkable in downtown, while others take you into the scenic countryside of LaGrange County. My kids loved spotting their favorites, especially the larger-than-life characters outside of the Blue Gate hotel. The trail is not only a fun scavenger hunt but also a great way to explore corners of Shipshewana you might otherwise miss. Look for familiar characters this year, like Bluey and even some Super Mario fun.
Pretzel-Making at Ben’s Pretzels
You may know Ben’s Pretzels from its locations across Indiana, but visiting its hometown shop in Shipshewana makes the experience even more special. Families can sign up for a pretzel-making class, twisting dough before baking up warm, salty masterpieces.
While we didn’t take the class this time, we’ve done it before, and it’s a memory that sticks. Kids love being hands-on in the kitchen, and parents love the simple joy of seeing them proud of something they made themselves. Plus, nothing says cozy fall day like a hot pretzel fresh from the oven.
Shipshe Pizza and Mini Golf
For some playful fun and a hearty meal, Shipshe Pizza and Mini Golf is a must. The newly refreshed mini golf course adds an extra splash of excitement with bright blue water hazards, quirky features like a seesaw hole, and plenty of opportunities for laughs.
Quinn couldn’t stop talking about how tricky (and hilarious) it was to fish her ball out of the water. After your round, head inside for delicious pizza. The combination of simple family food and silly fun makes this spot a favorite for kids.
Family Stays at Blue Gate Garden Inn
Choosing the right place to stay can make all the difference in a family trip. The Blue Gate Garden Inn is one of Shipshewana’s most family-friendly hotels. This fall, the entire property is decorated with festive touches inside and out.
We stayed in a family suite with two bunk beds, a couch room, and a primary bedroom. It had plenty of space for everyone to spread out. The kids loved the indoor pool, arcade, bonfires, and especially the on-site ice cream shop. Meanwhile, parents can appreciate the comfortable beds, hot tub, and welcoming atmosphere. It’s the kind of place where you don’t just crash after a long day, you relax and enjoy the experience.
JoJo’s Pretzels and Davis Mercantile
No Shipshewana trip is complete without a stop at Davis Mercantile, a four-story shopping destination filled with charming boutiques. Kids will especially love JoJo’s Pretzels, a local favorite where you can grab a soft, chewy snack before exploring the shops.
Inside the Mercantile, families can also ride the indoor carousel, browse toys and gifts, or simply wander through the maze of stores. It’s a great spot for a rainy day or to break up your outdoor adventures. Plus, it’s located in downtown Shipshewana, so right outside, you can keep your shopping adventures going, spot some more Strawbale Art Trail entries, and even stop for ice cream and other treats.
Dutch Creek Animal Farm
For an unforgettable animal encounter, head to Dutch Creek Animal Farm. This interactive experience takes you on a wagon ride through the property, where you’ll get unlimited feed to share with the animals.
Camels, alpacas, ostriches, giant steers, and even friendly cows come right up to the wagon to nibble from your hands. My kids were giggling nonstop as long tongues and curious noses reached for snacks. It’s not every day you get so close to such a wide variety of creatures, making this a highlight for families who love animals.
Comfort Food at Blue Gate Restaurant & Bakery
When it comes to dining in Shipshewana, comfort food takes center stage. The Blue Gate Restaurant & Bakery is a family favorite for its buffet-style dining, which lets kids sample a variety of hearty dishes without the pressure of committing to just one meal.
Expect fried chicken, mashed potatoes, noodles, pies, and other staples of Amish-style cooking. The bakery’s pies are legendary, so be sure to save room for dessert or grab one to take home.
Live Shows at Blue Gate Performing Arts Center
Older kids and parents will appreciate catching a live show at the Blue Gate Performing Arts Center. From tribute bands to gospel groups, the lineup offers something for every taste.
My teens loved seeing the Purple Rain Experience, a tribute to Prince. The venue is beautifully decorated, and every seat provides a good view of the stage. For families looking to mix culture and entertainment into their trip, this is a great option.
Fruit Hills Winery & Orchard
On your way home, make a stop at Fruit Hills Winery and Orchard. Parents can enjoy wine tasting while kids sip Sprite and explore the orchard. The venue often hosts outdoor events, making it a pleasant spot to soak up a little more fall atmosphere before heading back.
Even if you don’t plan to stay long, the setting is worth the visit; rolling hills, crisp apples, and peaceful views make it the perfect way to round out a Shipshewana trip.
Carriage or Buggy Rides
To truly embrace the Amish Country experience, consider a horse-drawn carriage or buggy ride. While we didn’t ride during this visit, we tried it last winter and had an amazing time. Kids especially love interacting with the horses, and parents enjoy the slower pace and the chance to see Shipshewana from a different perspective.

Timing matters: Most businesses in Shipshewana are closed on Sundays, so plan your must-do activities for Saturday. Use Sunday for self-guided fun like the Straw Bale Art Trail or exploring outdoor attractions.
Trip length: A weekend visit (one or two nights) is ideal. At just three hours from Indianapolis, the drive is manageable for kids and doesn’t cut too much into your fun time.
Seasonal highlights: Fall is perfect for pumpkin patches, scenic drives, and festivals. Pack layers for chilly evenings by the bonfire.
