Now Enrolling: Adaptive Dance Program for Kids Who Use Wheelchairs

Tendercare has partnered with Indy with Kids to promote accessibility and inclusion for children with disabilities in Indianapolis by highlighting accessible community activities on their platform. While Tendercare’s primary focus is on in-home services for medically complex children, they are dedicated to creating inclusive spaces where all children can participate fully.

KDO’s FLOW Program – Fueling Life on Wheels

Fall 2025 Session | Ages 6–17 | Offered at No Cost to Families | Limited Spots Available

Kids Dance Outreach (KDO), in partnership with IU Skills on Wheels and Riley Hospital for Children, is proud to offer FLOW (Fueling Life on Wheels) — a unique adaptive dance experience for children ages 6–17 who use manual or power wheelchairs. Offered at no cost to families, FLOW gives participants the opportunity to explore expressive movement, improve physical strength and coordination, and build confidence — all through the art of dance.

This isn’t just movement — it’s dance, and it’s supported by the very best. Every FLOW class is led by KDO’s highly trained Dance Teaching Artists and accompanied by professional musicians from the KDO Team, creating an immersive, engaging, and inspiring environment for each dancer.

“Through FLOW, children who use wheelchairs gain physical benefits while also growing in confidence, connecting with peers, and expressing themselves,”
– Michael J. Johnson, Founder & Artistic Director of KDO

What Makes FLOW Unique?

  • Dance-Focused Curriculum: FLOW is rooted in the joy and discipline of dance. Classes emphasize rhythm, movement, expression, and performance.
  • Live Music in Every Class: Every session features live accompaniment by KDO’s professional musicians, enhancing rhythm, coordination, and engagement.
  • Led by Expert Teaching Artists: KDO’s Teaching Artists are professional dancers, trained to work with children of all abilities, bringing both artistic excellence and educational skills to every session.
  • Supported by Medical Professionals: FLOW is designed in partnership with clinicians and therapists from IU Skills on Wheels and Riley Hospital for Children. This collaboration ensures each dancer receives the physical support, safety, and encouragement they need to thrive.

The Benefits of Adaptive Dance:

FLOW provides a structured and joyful environment where children can:

  • Develop strength, coordination, and mobility
  • Improve confidence, communication, and focus
  • Connect socially through peer-to-peer engagement
  • Experience sensory integration and creative expression
  • Celebrate growth in a public dance showcase

Classes use adaptive equipment such as tambourines and tactile props to support movement, rhythm, and spatial awareness. With a low dancer-to-teacher ratio, every child receives personalized attention.

Also Offered: Adaptive Dance for Children with Down Syndrome

KDO also offers its well-established Adaptive Dance Program for children ages 7–12 with Down syndrome and similarly presenting diagnoses. Through engaging and inclusive dance classes, students build physical, social, and emotional skills in a safe and welcoming environment. Learn more and submit an inquiry here
