As a mom, I spend what feels like half of my life in the car driving my kids to activities, bringing their friends along, running errands, hauling supplies, and trying to keep everyone on schedule. Now that we also have a new young driver in the family, I’m paying even closer attention to the features that can help everyone inside a vehicle stay safe.
I recently drove the Mazda CX-90 and had the opportunity to test it during a very typical, very busy stretch of family life. We took it berry picking, loaded it up for trips to the pool and water park, drove to baseball games, enjoyed a lake day, ran errands for the Children’s Museum Guild, went to book club, visited the library, and handled all the normal driving that fills our weeks.
Disclosure: I was not paid or otherwise compensated for this review. Mazda provided the CX-90 for my personal use for one week so I could experience the vehicle and its features firsthand. All opinions are my own.
The Mazda CX-90 can seat up to eight passengers, which gave us room for my kids, their friends, and all the gear that seems to follow us everywhere. It was also a beautiful vehicle and comfortable. The available sunroof made the interior feel bright and open, especially during our longer summer drives.
Still, the features I noticed most were the ones designed to help the driver stay aware of what is happening inside and outside the vehicle.
My Favorite Feature: The Seat Belt Reminder
My favorite feature in the Mazda CX-90 was the Seat Belt Reminder.
The vehicle uses in-seat weight sensors to show the driver which seats are occupied and whether the passengers in those seats are buckled. The information appears directly on a digital panel in the front seat, so I could quickly check everyone’s seat belt status without turning around or repeatedly asking, “Is everybody buckled?”
Seats with properly fastened seat belts display a specific icon, while occupied seats with unfastened belts are highlighted. If someone removes a seat belt while the vehicle is moving, the indicator flashes and a persistent warning chime sounds.
As someone who regularly drives children and teenagers, I loved this feature. Kids sometimes unbuckle before the vehicle is fully parked, and younger passengers may need reminders. When I am transporting my children’s friends, I also want to know that every passenger is securely buckled without putting anyone on the spot.
This feature feels especially valuable with a young driver in the family. New drivers already have so many things competing for their attention. A clear visual reminder can help them develop the habit of checking every passenger before pulling away.
Technology That Helps the Driver Stay Focused
Distracted driving is not only about texting. It can also involve adjusting controls, looking at navigation, changing the music, talking with passengers, or trying to manage children in the back seat.
The CX-90 includes features and controls designed to reduce the amount of reaching, searching, and button-pushing required while driving. Hands-free options make it easier to keep your eyes on the road and your hands where they belong.
Technology should never replace attentive driving, but thoughtful features can reduce some of the small distractions that build up during a busy family trip.
A recent Mazda consumer survey found that 71% of Indianapolis drivers prioritize safety over factors such as interior style, vehicle brand, and road noise. Parents may enjoy a beautiful interior and a comfortable ride, but we also want to feel confident about the vehicle carrying the people who matter most to us.
Safety Support for Busy Family Driving
The CX-90 also offers modern driver-assistance technology, including features such as blind-spot monitoring, automatic emergency braking, and lane-keeping support.
These features are useful during everyday driving, especially when navigating crowded parking lots, busy highways, and unfamiliar roads. They can also provide an additional layer of support for young drivers who are still learning how to anticipate changing traffic conditions.
After taking the Mazda CX-90 through a full schedule of family adventures and errands, I appreciated how it balanced comfort, passenger space, and practical safety technology. The sunroof and comfortable interior made our outings more enjoyable, but the Seat Belt Reminder was the feature that stayed with me.
When you spend so much time driving the people you love, extra safety features add so much peace of mind.
