Fiesta de la Familia: How to Get Free Admission to The Children’s Museum on September 15

Vibrant colors, rhythmic music, and the creation of beautiful crafts will immerse families in fun and the cultures of Latin American countries on September 15 at the Children’s Museum of Indianapolis. Fiesta de la Familia is hosted annually in September and offers an opportunity for Indy residents and visitors to check out the museum at no cost.

From 10 am-5 pm on Sunday, September 15, admission is FREE as the Children’s Museum of Indianapolis celebrates National Hispanic Heritage Month.

Fiesta de la Familia will also be your last chance to play in Take Me There: Greece before it closes to make way for a new exhibit! The Greece exhibit will close at the end of the day on September 15 and the gallery will not reopen until the summer of 2025, when visitors will be invited to travel to a new country. Visit Take Me There: Greece one last time to care for the baby sea turtles, go fishing, explore a Greek home, and learn about olive oil production!

Families and children will enjoy special music, art, and culture during this popular event. Plans for 2024 are still in the works, but we expect details to be announced by the time FREE tickets are made available on September 5. Tickets are limited, so be sure to claim yours as soon as possible!

In previous years, activities at Fiesta de la Familia have included:

  • Grupo Bembé- Take a journey across Latin America with a popular Puerto Rican band with music from several genres including Salsa, Bachata, Merengue, Cumbia and Latin Rock. (Live streamed on The Children’s Museums’ Facebook page for those unable to enjoy it in person.) 11:30 a.m.-noon & 1:30 -2 p.m.
  • Paper Flower Fiesta- Mexican paper flowers are considered pieces of folk art that represent the soul and culture of the artisans who make them. Watch a demonstration then take home an activity kit to create the flowers.
  • Guatemalan Worry Dolls- Create your own worry doll at home after watching a demonstration and learning more about the Central American country. According to legend, Guatemalan children tell their worries to worry dolls, placing them under their pillows. When they awaken, the dolls have given them wisdom and knowledge to eliminate their worries.
  • Panamanian Molas- Provided supplies and a demonstration help visitors design their own piece of colorful textile folk art created and worn by the Kuna Indians, the indigenous people on the small coral islands of San Blas Archipelago along the Atlantic coast of Panama and Columbia. Mola means elaborate embroidered panels that Kuna women wear on the front and back of their traditional blouses.

In addition, don’t forget to work off some of that pent-up energy by visiting the one-and-a-half acre outdoor Riley Children’s Health Sports Legends Experience®. Try out a dozen different sports and experiences.

All permanent exhibits will also be open during Fiesta de la Familia at the Children’s Museum. Pretend you’re an archaeologist in Treasures of Earth, meet prehistoric creatures in Dinosphere, splash in the pond in Playscape, or play a game of classic Pacman in the Carousel of Wishes and Dreams gallery. There’s something for all ages at this world-class museum, so bring the whole family for your day at Fiesta de la Familia.
