A family day at the farm is one of my favorite ways to celebrate fall, and this season, I took my kids to Lark Ranch in Lanesville, Indiana. With pumpkins, farm animals, rides, and room to play, there are plenty of reasons to gather the family and head to Southern Indiana.
When I’m choosing a fall outing with my kids, I’m looking for somewhere we can spend time together without planning every minute. I want activities that catch their interest, opportunities to get outside, and enough variety to make a day of it. Lark Ranch brings those pieces together, with a mix of traditional farm fun and attractions that give families plenty to explore. Since we’ve visited the other two Lark Ranch locations, Lark Ranch in Greenfield and Lark Ranch in Loogootee, I knew that we could expect a high-quality, budget-friendly fall farm visit at the other Lark Ranch.
If you’re planning a fall visit, here’s what to know about spending a family day at Lark Ranch in Lanesville, just 20 minutes from Louisville.
Plenty of Places to Play at Lark Ranch
The Lanesville location has a bounce pillow, pedal carts for up to four people to share, a corn pit, bounce houses, playsets, and life-size birdhouses among its attractions. There’s also an animal trail and Highland cows to see. It’s a lineup that gives kids several ways to play between the larger attractions like the wildflower field, the corn maze, and the hay ride.
As a parent, I appreciate having that variety. Sometimes the activity you think will be the biggest hit gets a quick visit, while a simple play area holds everyone’s attention much longer.
There’s no need to turn the farm into a checklist. If your kids are happily playing, let them enjoy it before moving along. The point of setting aside a family day is having time to follow their curiosity, spend time together, and see where the afternoon takes you.
A visit with the animals can also be a nice break between more active stops.
Train Ride at Lark Ranch
There’s something about a train ride that makes a family outing feel like an adventure. At Lark Ranch, the mile-long train is a chance to climb aboard, settle into your seat, and enjoy a different view of the farm. It’s included with admission, so keep it on your list as you plan your day.
For families, a train ride also offers a welcome change of pace. Kids can spend so much of a farm visit moving from one activity to the next that sitting down together becomes part of the fun. You can take in the scenery, talk about what everyone wants to do next, and give little legs a break.
I’d leave room in the schedule for experiences like this rather than trying to rush through every attraction.
Carnival Rides at Lark Ranch Meet Farm Fun
One of the biggest draws at Lark Ranch is the combination of farm activities and amusement rides. General admission includes unlimited carnival rides, giving families the opportunity to return to an attraction throughout their visit.
Pumpkins and a Corn Maze at Lark Ranch
The pumpkin patch and corn maze bring those familiar fall traditions into the day. Access to the U-pick patch is included with admission, but you’ll pay extra to take a pumpkin home.
Choosing a pumpkin is an activity all its own. Some kids want the biggest one they can find. Others are searching for a tiny pumpkin, an unusual shape, or the one they’ve already decided is perfect.
For the corn maze, let the kids help choose the route. Work together, take turns making decisions, and keep the experience comfortable for your youngest family members. You don’t need to make every part of the day a competition—although a little family debate over which way to turn is practically a corn maze tradition.
Plan for Food and Extra Activities
Food vendors at Lanesville offer carnival favorites, sweet treats, and apple cider slushies. Pony rides, gem mining, and apple cannons are activities with an additional charge.
Before arriving, decide whether you want to budget for extras. It can help to talk with your kids about those choices ahead of time, especially when there are already plenty of included attractions to enjoy.
Plan a food break into the visit, too. Stopping before everyone gets overly hungry can make the rest of the day more enjoyable. Lark Ranch does not permit outside food and drinks, apart from a limited birthday celebration exception, so account for that when planning your visit.
What to Know Before You Go to Lark Ranch in Lanesville
Wear comfortable shoes and dress for the weather. Layers are useful for fall outings, especially if you’re staying into the evening. Lark Ranch welcomes strollers and wagons, though some farm areas have uneven terrain.
