Looking for a day trip out of Indy for the family? Check out the Hesston Steam Museum located three hours north of Indianapolis. Your kids will love the different sized train rides the museum offers. With various activities going on throughout the year there is sure to be a memorable experience for your family.
Lets start with the train rides. I was amazed at the various sized tracks and trains this place offered. My kids love trains and this place was a hit. There are small trains, medium sized trains and big trains. Some are steam and some are diesel. While you can enter the museum for FREE train rides are $5 for kids and $10 for adults or you can buy a 4 ride combo ticket at $10 for kids and $17 for adults. Throughout the year they have different themed train rides like a Santa Train, Civil War Train, Ghost train, etc. Be sure to check out the calendar on their website for all the details.
There is a collection of other steam powered equipment as well as an old blacksmith shop to peruse. I liked that there were steps leading up to some of the old equipment for the kids to climb on and take a closer look.
If you get hungry while you are there check out Doc’s Old Soda Fountain. or the sandwich shop. There is also a small gift shop.
What to know before you go. The museum is open certain weekends and holidays throughout the year so be sure to check out the calendar on their website before you go. Also Hesston is in the Central Time Zone so check your clocks too. There are nice restrooms with a baby changing table. Most activities are outdoors to dress for the weather.
