McCloud Nature Park is a treasure of outdoor fun, with 232 acres of woodlands, prairies, and streams just waiting to be explored. Whether you’re looking for a peaceful stroll, a chance to spot wildlife, or a cool place to have a picnic with your family, this park has it all.

My kids especially enjoy the Nature Center and the fun trails, which are perfect for little explorers! It’s also an incredible location for family pictures, with stunning backdrops like the covered bridge, vibrant wildflowers, and picturesque landscapes. Things to Know:

There are 6.5 miles of well-marked nature trails with gravel and natural surfaces. To accommodate those with disabilities, FREE rentals of Grit Freedom Chairs are available, allowing everyone to enjoy the trails.
The park spans 232 acres of woods, ravines, prairies, and creeks, with plenty of lookout points offering breathtaking views.
The Nature Center features interactive activities, exhibits, a bird-viewing room, and live reptiles, making it a fun and educational stop for visitors.
A 100+ year-old truss bridge spans the ravine and creek, making it an ideal spot for family photos.
Live honeybee hives can be observed during the summer, offering a fascinating glimpse into these vital pollinators.
The park includes a wetland habitat with boardwalks and observation decks, perfect for exploration and wildlife viewing.
Nature play areas let kids climb and explore, while Big Walnut Creek offers a perfect spot for summer creek stomping.

McCloud Nature Center

One of the highlights of the park is the McCloud Nature Center, a hub of fun and education. Inside, guests will find interactive displays, a bird-viewing room, live reptiles, rotating animal exhibits, and a library of nature-themed books. Special play stations for kids and naturalist staff make every visit both educational and engaging. Their naturalists are happy to answer questions about the park, provide information about the plants and animals, and guide visitors through the exhibits.

The Nature Center is an enclosed, climate-controlled building equipped with modern restrooms and a water fountain inside. Outside, two additional restrooms are available daily from dawn to dusk, along with a dog-friendly drinking fountain.

Admission to the Nature Center is free, and hours extend from weekends in the winter to weekdays during summer and fall.

Arboretum

Another one of the park’s unique highlights is its young arboretum, located near the historic truss bridge. This growing collection of trees is carefully curated to represent diverse species, making it an excellent spot for tree enthusiasts or anyone who enjoys a peaceful walk through nature. In the summer months, the arboretum is also home to the McCloud Bee House, where visitors can observe live honeybee activity behind plexiglass by raising the blinds. This engaging feature combines education with fascination, offering a deeper appreciation for pollinators and their role in the ecosystem.

Mobility Wheelchairs

The Gary Emsweller Parks and Trails Fund, in collaboration with the Parks Foundation of Hendricks County, now offers GRIT 3.0 Mobility Wheelchairs for alternatively-abled park visitors. These innovative mobility wheelchairs are designed for use on easy-to-moderate hiking trails and can be powered by the rider or their companions. They are available for two-hour rentals. To ensure availability, guests are encouraged to make their rental requests at least two days prior to their visit and specify their desired location. Wheelchair reservations may be made through the Hendricks County Parks website at hendrickscountyparks.org.

Fun Family Programs

Programming at McCloud is another highlight, with naturalists hosting free family events and educational activities throughout the year. Summer nature camps, preschool programs, and even ecology classes for homeschoolers ensure there’s something for everyone.

One of the most popular events is the free monthly astronomy program from May to October, featuring high-powered telescopes and expert guidance from the Indiana Astronomical Society.

You also won’t want to miss Maple Syrup Days at McCloud. Typically held in late winter, this popular festival gives visitors an up-close look at the process that turns sap into syrup. Enjoy free, family-friendly activities, purchase your own locally made syrup, and register ahead of time for the pancake breakfast. Maple Syrup Days 2025 are March 1 and 8 and the pancake breakfast will be held on March 8.
