Indiana is home to a handful of incredible zoos that offer visitors an up-close look and personal encounter with remarkable creatures from around the world. If you’re looking for things to do in South Bend, the Potawatomi Zoo is Indiana’s oldest zoo and it’s worth a visit.
Despite its compact size, this zoo is a hidden gem and offers a delightful experience for wildlife enthusiasts. Visitors can interact with over 400 animals, including red pandas, snow leopards, and Amur tigers. My kids loved the beautiful birds, seeing the lemurs playfully wrestling on the island, and following the peacocks throughout the zoo.
Things to Do at the Zoo in South Bend
Spanning over 23 acres, this charming zoo offers many attractions and experiences for visitors of all ages. There are mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, and invertebrates to see. From big cats and primates to exotic birds and reptiles, the zoo has so many different species for guests to learn about.
My kids enjoy spending time at the Zoo Farm, where they can see domesticated animals like goats, sheep, pigs, and chickens. There’s even a petting zoo area, allowing kids hands-on encounters with smaller animals.
The zoo offers a train ride, a carousel, and a playground, all of the ingredients for a perfect day for kids.
Be sure to check the schedule for special animal feedings. One of our best family memories was standing on the platform, eye to eye with a giraffe, and hand-feeding it.
