In our house, we fight a battle every day. The battle over screen time.
I have two active school-aged boys who love to ready, play outside, and create vast imaginary worlds with their action figures. However, they also love playing Minecraft, watching YouTube videos, and consuming mass amounts of Disney Channel. Left to their own devices, they’d spend way too much time in front of an electronic advice. (No judgment, I also spend way too much time in front of an electronic device!)
We limit screen time, but I’m always looking for more ways we can have fun without screens. That’s how we found Saltire Games on Pendleton Pike in Indianapolis. Saltire has quickly become one of our favorite places to visit, and now we’re there most weekends.
Saltire sells a wide variety of board games, as well as cards and supplies for games like Pokémon, Dungeons and Dragons, and Magic the Gathering. But Saltire is so much more than just a game store. It’s a place to gather, a place to learn, and a place to have screen-free family fun.
Half of Saltire’s space is devoted to shopping. You’ll find all kinds of gaming supplies and just about every board game imaginable. The other side of the store is devoted to playing games. Tables and chairs fill the room and there are shelves lined with board games that are available to play – for free! The owners of Saltire believe you should be able to try out a game before you make an investment, and they’ve made that possible in their game room.
Speaking of their game room, there’s always something fun happening there! We love visiting on Sundays for the free Pokémon league. The amazing staff at Saltire taught my kids to play the card game, and they are always super patient and helpful. There’s also times for Magic and D&D, and nights where you can demo brand new board games. In addition to all this screen-free fun, Saltire offers birthday parties, summer camps, and a summer reading program for kids. Follow their Facebook page to keep up with their events!
The welcoming atmosphere and their dedication to the community has made Saltire one of our favorite places to visit and support. If you’re looking for some screen-free family fun you can also take home with you, make the time to check out this fun family gathering spot. You won’t regret it!
