Happy Fall Y’all!
A lot of people in Indiana love fall and honestly, what’s not to love? The leaves are changing, the days are getting shorter, the air is crisp, and the pumpkins are invading everything we do. Pumpkin parties at preschool, picking pumpkins from the patch, and a few too many runs through your local coffee company for their version of the Pumpkin Spice Latte.
My kids have been asking me for all the pumpkin spice lately–even Oreos come in a pumpkin spice variety! I love pumpkin spice, but I’m a purist. I prefer it in pumpkin pie and the occasional muffin or bread. But this list from this list of farm recipes curated by the Glass Barn at the Indiana State has me rethinking everything about I’ve known about pumpkins and pumpkin spice.
A Pie Pumpkin or Carving Pumpkin?
For starters, what sort of pumpkin is best for baking. Is it like apples where different varieties work better for baking, or is it more one size fits all? Our friends at My Fearless Kitchen are with all the answers! Not only will you know the difference between a carving and pie pumpkins, but you’ll know the best pumpkins to use in the kitchen.
How to Clean Pumpkin Seeds
When you’ve picked the perfect pumpkin and carved it with the family, what do you do with the remains? One of my favorite parts of pumpkin carving is roasting and eating the seeds for days after. Cleaning pumpkin seeds can be such a chore but the reward is so worth it. My Fearless Kitchen takes the fear out of this task with their foolproof method to easily clean the pumpkin seeds.
How to Cook Pumpkin
When you talk about daunting, baking your own pumpkin seems a little dauting. My Fearless Kitchen provides step-by-step instructions on how to make your own puree and once you’ve tried it, you will never want to buy canned pumpkin again! And since they’ve already told us which pumpkins to use, we can all be pros with our recipes.
Hoosier farming families continue working hard to produce the food you and your family enjoy every day. Thank you to our local soybean and corn farmers for sharing their favorite recipes.
