Indiana Landmarks Walking Tours: Discover Indianapolis One Step at a Time

A young child stands beside the Indianapolis Canal Walk on a sunny autumn day, with calm water reflecting nearby buildings and colorful trees. Text overlay reads “Indianapolis Walking Tours with Kids.”

I have lived in and explored Indianapolis for years, and I am still regularly surprised by how much of this city I have walked right past without really seeing it. I learned so much about our city when writing my book, Indianapolis Scavenger, a scavenger hunt of our iconic Indianapolis neighborhoods.

A beautiful building becomes so much more interesting when you know who gathered there. A sidewalk you have crossed a hundred times suddenly feels different when you learn what stood there before. A neighborhood you thought you knew starts telling stories about the people who built it, changed it, loved it, and helped make Indianapolis what it is today.

That is exactly what I loved about taking an Indianapolis walking tour with Indiana Landmarks. These guided tours are a chance to slow down, look up, and experience familiar places in an entirely new way. They are interesting without feeling like a classroom lecture, educational without being stuffy, and just active enough to make them a great outing for families, visitors, and curious locals.

Indiana Landmarks offers a variety of public Indianapolis walking tours from April through September, with tours focusing on downtown destinations, architecture, neighborhoods, and the history hiding in plain sight all around the city.

Why Take an Indianapolis Walking Tour?

Indianapolis is a city many of us experience in pieces. We drive downtown for an event, walk across Monument Circle during the holidays, visit museums at White River State Park, or grab dinner on Mass Ave. But it is easy to miss the stories connecting those places.

An Indiana Landmarks tour gives you the opportunity to experience Indianapolis at a slower pace. You are not just heading from the parking garage to your destination. You are looking at building details, hearing about the people who shaped the city, and learning why certain places matter.

For local families, this is such a fun way to make history feel real. Kids can stand in the places where important events happened instead of only reading about them in a book. For grandparents, parents, and older kids, it is a wonderful shared activity that can spark conversation long after the tour ends.

For visitors, these tours offer something beyond the usual “here are the attractions” overview, and for locals, the tours make you fall in love with your own city all over again.

Monument Circle Historic District Walking Tour

Monument Circle may be one of the most recognizable places in Indianapolis, but there is so much more to it than driving around the Circle or snapping a picture in front of the Soldiers and Sailors Monument.

The Monument Circle Historic District Walking Tour explores the heart of downtown Indianapolis on a guided half-mile walk. This is a particularly approachable option for families because the distance is manageable, while the setting is full of recognizable sights that keep everyone engaged.

This is the tour for people who love iconic Indianapolis landmarks, impressive architecture, and those little historical details that make you say, “Wait, I never knew that!” It is also a great option when you have out-of-town guests and want to show them a piece of Indianapolis that’s full of stories. Plus, you can add on to your adventure by making the trek to the top of the iconic Soldiers and Sailors Monument, playing at the pop-up park, Spark on the Circle, or grabbing a bite to eat.

White River State Park Walking Tour

Families already know White River State Park as a favorite destination for museums, outdoor concerts, canal walks, and green space. Long before it became one of the city’s most popular family-friendly areas, this part of Indianapolis had its own evolving story.

On the White River State Park Walking Tour, guides share history stretching from the time of Indianapolis’s settlement to the present day. This tour connects the city’s past with a place families visit right now, which makes it especially fun for kids and adults who have already spent time in the park.

I love the idea of taking this tour as part of a downtown family day. You could learn about the area together, then continue exploring with an Indianapolis canal walk, a picnic, or a visit to a nearby attraction, or stick around for a concert or event, like the outdoor summer movies at White River State Park. It turns a familiar destination into an entirely new Indianapolis experience.

Indy Downtown Safari Walking Tour

This is the Indiana Landmarks tour I would especially recommend for families with younger children, because it turns downtown Indianapolis into a real-life animal hunt. On the Indy Downtown Safari Walking Tour, you’ll look for animals hidden in the architecture and sculptures of downtown Indy, including bears, bison, frogs, fish, and even mythical creatures. Instead of asking kids to simply admire a building, this tour gives them something playful to search for while they walk.

The safari is a wonderful reminder that history and architecture do not have to feel grown-up or serious to be meaningful. During the tour, guides share stories and symbolism behind the creatures and explain how they connect to the city’s history. Suddenly, decorative details that most of us would walk past without a second glance become the most interesting part of the adventure.

This was my favorite tour, and I love this tour idea for families because it feels like a scavenger hunt, an art walk, and a history lesson all rolled into one. It is also a great choice for visiting relatives, homeschool families, grandparents with kids, or anyone who wants an easy and memorable introduction to downtown Indianapolis. Indiana Landmarks lists Downtown Safari among its available private Indianapolis walking tours, and public tour dates are occasionally offered through the organization’s seasonal calendar.

Mass Ave Walking Tour

Mass Ave is one of those Indianapolis destinations that always feels lively and full of personality. There are theaters, restaurants, local shops, public art, and people out enjoying the city. The Massachusetts Avenue corridor also has a fascinating history behind the fun we see there today.

The Mass Ave Walking Tour shares the unique history of this flourishing cultural and commercial corridor. This is a great choice for adults, older kids, and teens who enjoy art, theater, restaurants, interesting buildings, and a neighborhood with plenty to see along the way.

This tour also makes an easy date day or friend outing. Take the tour, then stick around for a meal, a treat, or a little shopping. Suddenly, your usual stroll down Mass Ave becomes a deeper look at one of Indy’s most recognizable cultural districts.

Herron-Morton Place Neighborhood Walking Tour

Indianapolis history is not limited to downtown landmarks. Our neighborhoods have stories too, and the Herron-Morton Place Neighborhood Walking Tour offers an opportunity to explore one of the city’s charming historic districts.

This 90-minute guided tour focuses on Indianapolis heritage and architecture in Herron-Morton Place. It is a wonderful fit for anyone who enjoys historic homes, beautiful streetscapes, neighborhood stories, and seeing how a community has changed over time.

This is the type of tour that may inspire you to spend the rest of the day noticing porches, rooflines, windows, and old homes everywhere you go. For families with kids who enjoy design, drawing, photography, or local history, it can be an especially fun way to explore.

Decoding Downtown Indy Walking Tour

Some of the best city stories are the ones you would never notice without someone pointing them out. The Decoding Downtown Indy Walking Tour focuses on the hidden history of downtown Indianapolis, helping guests discover stories tucked into the streets and buildings around them.

This is a fun choice for anyone who loves mysteries, surprising facts, pop culture connections, or finding out what used to be in a place they visit today. It turns downtown into a bit of a scavenger hunt for history, where every block might have something unexpected to reveal.

What About the City Market Catacombs?

Indiana Landmarks is also known for its City Market Catacombs Tours, which take visitors beneath Indianapolis City Market’s west plaza to see the brick-barrel-vaulted ruins of Tomlinson Hall. However, due to planned construction surrounding the Indianapolis City Market, Catacombs tours are unavailable in 2026 and 2027.

While we will have to wait a little longer to head underground again, there are still plenty of ways to explore Indianapolis above ground through the walking tour season.

These Tours Are for More Than History Buffs

You do not need to be a history expert to enjoy an Indiana Landmarks walking tour. You just need to be curious.

These tours are for families looking for something different to do together. They are for visitors who want to experience Indianapolis beyond the obvious attractions. They are for architecture fans, pop culture lovers, lifelong Indy residents, homeschool families, photographers, grandparents, date-day planners, and anyone who has ever wondered about the buildings and streets they pass every day.

I went on three different Indiana Landmark Tours, and each one made me want to sign up for another one immediately. There is something so satisfying about learning the stories of your own city while you are standing right in the middle of them. The guides are all knowledgeable and have great stories.
