Anderson Flower Farm | Gather Gorgeous U-Pick Blooms

Here at Indy with Kids, we’re huge supporters of local agriculture, family farms, and getting outdoors. Over the years, we’ve explored all the U-pick flower farms around Indianapolis! Today, we’re taking you along on a quick trip to Anderson Flower Farm in Frankfort, Indiana, just about a 45-minute drive from downtown Indianapolis. This would be a fantastic stop after a day of swimming at the Seashore Waterpark in Lebanon.

Sharing the Serenity of the Farm

Lois Anderson started growing flowers in her garden on her family farm and people loved them! During a class reunion one year, her friends and classmates told her that her flowers were so beautiful that she should begin selling them at local farmers’ markets. Lois shared that she doesn’t want to be away from her beautiful home with her farm and her flower gardens, so she wondered if people would instead come to her.

She has since opened up her farm and invited everyone to come participate in U-pick flower harvesting. As it turns out, visitors are more than willing to visit and gather their own gorgeous bouquets.

U-Pick at Anderson Flower Farm

When my friend MaryAnne told me about the Anderson family farm, I knew it was going to be a hit and I was right! When you arrive, you park your car in a small gravel lot outside of the barn. Then, make your way into the barn for check-in.

You’ll pay and select your bucket size at the check-in barn. Filling a large bucket costs $35 and will provide you with enough glorious, beautiful flowers to create two medium-sized bouquets. A smaller bucket, which will hold enough blooms to build one medium bouquet, is $25.

With the purchase of a large or small bucket, you have the option to add kids’ buckets for just $5. My children each had a kids’ bucket that was a sand pail with a shovel. They were invited to fill it up and even keep the bucket when they were done!

There are two garden areas to pick from and you’ll want to explore both. You’ll find yourself surrounded by tons of vibrant flowers, so take your time as you hunt for your floral treasures and soak up all the beauty in the garden.

Once you’ve filled your bucket, there are tables available for arranging your bouquets, if you wish. If you’re visiting on a quieter day, a family member working at the farm may be free to give pointers on arrangements. The Andersons have even been so thoughtful as to provide coloring pages to keep small children entertained while you build your floral display piece.

Children’s Buckets at Anderson Flower Farm

When at least one adult in your party purchases a $25 or $35 flower bucket, each child in your party is able to purchase a children’s flower bucket for only $5. When they’re done selecting their flowers and placing them in the bucket, the kids get to take home the entire bucket!

One of my favorite things about this flower farm is that Lois told the kids what kinds of flowers they would need to make the most attractive flower arrangement. I don’t mean the variety, I just mean a type, or in this case a shape. There are five elements to the most perfect bouquet: air, disks, filler, focal, and spike. Each of the flower garden areas is labeled so that the kids know where they can find each of these floral shapes.

You’ll see various flowers blooming throughout the season, from Delphiniums to Snap Dragons to Lisianthus to Sweet William to Lilies to Apple Mint, and more. You’ll discover some of your very favorite flowers in the field or come to love a new flower.

The Anderson family recommends coming during the best hours to pick flowers. If possible, plan your visit for the morning between 9 am-11 am or the afternoon between 5 pm-7 pm.

Know Before You Go

  • Bring along a bucket to take your flowers home. There are buckets available for collecting flowers, but after paying you’ll need to transfer them to your own container for taking home.
  • Wear closed-toe shoes. Anderson Flower Farm is a working farm and can get muddy.
  • You’ll spend 30-90 minutes in the field. Consider bringing or wearing sunblock, insect repellent, and sunglasses.
  • You may want to call ahead to be sure that there are enough blooming flowers remaining in the field. Often flowers grow in “waves” and can get picked out.
