The Nature Academy will combine social interaction with lectures/presentations, as much hands-on opportunity as topics allow, and outside exploration related to each topic as possible. Experts in a variety of topics will lead each program. In addition to casual, fun, and in-depth learning, The Nature Academy will include time for refreshments before and after our scheduled speakers. Refreshments are at 6:30 pm, with the program starting at 7:00 pm unless listed otherwise. Field trips to other locations are possible as are more customized meeting times that accommodate specific topics. Participation is encouraged at any time and does not need to be consistent.

Introduction to Astronomy
Astronomy enthusiast Dr. Doug Balogh will introduce you to the cosmos. He will also describe the capabilities of the powerful equipment he brought and give tips on making the most of the telescope you have stashed in your closet. If clear skies prevail, you will have a chance to view the night sky.

I TOAD you Frogs are Cool
Jim Horton, current President of the Hoosier Herpetological Society will join to help you feel warm and fuzzy about reptiles and amphibians. With a particular emphasis on frogs and toads, Jim will bring you up to speed on life-cycles, habitat and environmental issues. Let’s get up close and personal with a few visiting, hairless, four-legged friends.

Wild about Warblers
Migration is in full swing, and warblers receive a lot of attention. Noteworthy birder Scott Enochs will be showing you what all the fuss is about. He will share some of his knowledge on nesting, migration, and cool facts about these fast-moving, colorful songbirds.

Wildflowers not Weeds
Not all plants are created equal. Native plants and wildflowers serve a special purpose for our Indiana ecology. Naturalist “Nature Dan” Popiela will present how native wildflowers benefit you and have adapted for our Indiana environment. A hike to view and identify wildflowers (emphasizing those in bloom) will immediately follow the presentation.
