Ice Skating Lessons Indianapolis
The Winter Club of Indianapolis offers Learn to Skate classes to beginners, children, adults, and advanced skaters at Pop Weaver Youth Pavilion at the Indiana State Fairgrounds from September through January.
Learn to Skate is a series of classes that meets once a week for 4 to 8 weeks, with several sessions throughout the year. Ice skating is for everyone, and Learn to Skate provides instruction for children aged three through senior adults!
Learn to Skate Classes
Learn-to-skate classes are divided into groups by age and ability. Skaters can learn basic and advanced skills. There’s even a theatrical team skating skills class! Beginners ages 3-5 enroll in Snowplow Sam 1. Beginners ages 6-14 enroll in Basic 1. Beginners ages 15 and up enroll in Adult 1. Adults will move through Adult 1 – 6 levels.
Learn to Play Hockey Classes
If you’ve got a future hockey star in the family, Learn to Skate is the right place for him or her. After mastering skills in Basic 1 and Basic 2, skaters can transfer to a Learn to Play hockey program or an instructional league.
Learn to Skate USA Membership
A LTSUSA membership is required to enroll in Learn to Skate classes. Members receive a welcome packet and magazine and secondary sports accident insurance. Members can participate in lessons, performances, and competitions.
Learn to Skate at the Indiana State Fairgrounds
Ice skating lessons at Pop Weaver Youth Pavilion at the Indiana State Fairgrounds include 30 minutes of group instruction plus 30 minutes of practice. Students will also receive a complimentary skate rental, a parking pass, and tickets to the annual Winter Wonderland recital.
Choose classes on Sundays or Thursdays. The cost per skater is $200 for a 7-week session. If you miss a class, you are permitted to make it up within the same session!
What Should I Wear?
Skaters enrolled in Snowplow Sam, Basic 1, and Adult 1 are strongly encouraged to wear a helmet with a chin strap. Gloves, a light sweater or jacket, and pants or leggings that you can easily move in are also recommended.
Complimentary Rental Skates
Complimentary ice skates are available to all participants in the Learn to Skate programs. Little kids wear the same size in skates and shoes. Big kids, teens, and adults usually wear skates one size smaller than their shoe size. You want a snug fit and you’ll want a pair of tall thin socks that cover your ankles.
Practice at Public Skate Sessions
Pop Weaver Youth Pavillion offers public sessions on most weekends to come and play around on the ice. During winter, check out these other ice skating rinks in Central Indiana, like the wonderful Ice at Carter Green at the Carmel Christkindlmarkt.
Advanced Skating Programs
Once you’ve mastered ice skating, move on to the ASPIRE Program, a U.S. Figure Skating program for skaters who want to take their training to a more challenging level. Master turns, crossovers, jumps, and spins in the ASPIRE Program.
The Circle City Theatre on Ice is another program that recruits youth and adults for a team competition that combines acting, dance, and skating to tell musical stories on the ice in a choreographic exercise.
Not sure if ice skating is right for you? Hop over to one of the area’s many ice skating rinks to spend an hour on the ice during public skating.
