I will be returning to Founders Park in Carmel again and again with my two little boys, and here are my top reasons: toddler fun and toddler safety. And bonus, the park is open every day from 7 am to 9 pm.
We’ve been to numerous parks in and around Indy, and it’s really hard to narrow down favorites because we’re fortunate to have so many people who care about the well-being of family spaces. But Founders Park immediately stood out as a top contender because from the first few moments of walking into their play area, I felt a sense of calm. And if you’re feeling any sort of calm with two toddler boys, you know you’ve struck gold.
Fun & Safety for Everyone
If you’re a parent of littles, you know the feeling of walking into any environment and immediately scanning the area for entry and exit points. If there’s one thing little kids like to do, it’s to explore and move quickly. For me, I’m often taking my two little boys alone on outings, and they rarely like to go in the same direction. Imagine that!
At Founders Park, there’s a stone barrier around the play area that creates a clear visual for families. And the play space itself is idyllic for families of younger kids. My boys are 3.5 and 1.5, and they both had an incredible time running, climbing, and exploring the play area’s pretend “river,” made of blue turf material. They just couldn’t believe that they could climb into the “river” and explore the rock beds surrounding it.
There’s also a ginormous sandbox that’s partially shaded, complete with construction truck toys. You’ll notice this pretty much as soon as you walk in – and it’s nestled right by the Wilfong Pavilion that’s complete with tables, shade, and restrooms.
In addition to the turf, river, and sandbox, there are slides, climbing structures, and tunnels (suitable for toddlers), as well as larger climbing rocks that appeal to older kids.
Upon exiting, you’ll find a permanent free little library that’s right by the parking lot. The rocks around the library stand were even painted with book cover artwork! You better believe that my boys were eager to pick out a book to enjoy for our drive home.
We were in the play area for a little under two hours and truly had a great time. (Believe me, it was hard to convince them both to leave.) And for me, as a mom, I will definitely be back with them soon because it was honestly just a great experience overall for our group.
Beyond the Play Space, Nature Awaits
While the park is great for young children as it relates to the playground, there’s also a really lovely paved trail and soccer/lacrosse field that welcome families and people of all ages. I saw a lot of teens in the soccer field practicing during our visit.
I’m frequently asked to go on “bear hunts,” so thankfully, this trail checks the box for our nature adventures, and thankfully, Hamilton County doesn’t seem to have too many bears around. (Don’t tell my boys!) But seriously – be it walking, jogging, or biking, it’s a great trail to get fresh air and movement.
And if you like to fish, I have great news for you. Thanks to the Indiana Department of Natural Resources, the family-friendly pond at Founders Park is stocked with bass, catfish, and hybrid sunfish!
Add Founders Park to your low-stress list this summer
I’m right there with you when it comes to feeling overwhelmed at times during the summer. The activities are aplenty, and it can get stressful trying to fit everything in between school years. But with this park visit, I felt reset, and my boys had a blast. I could easily watch them while also enjoying my coffee. Next time, I may even go with a fellow momma, as it’s a park where you can actually have a conversation with someone, rather than running around trying to keep tabs on everyone.
And as a potential personal visit, it’s on my “destress list” for when I just want to take a nature walk in silence. And while those moments can be rare, they’re important – and Founders Park is a great one-stop shop for the entire family.
Directions and Ease of Parking
Located right off Hazel Dell Parkway in Carmel, the park is incredibly easy to find. Coming from Fishers, it took us only about 20 minutes to get there. The parking lot is spacious and seems to be updated, with parking spaces conveniently located right by the playground. So when we parked, I could quickly usher the boys in without having to trek too far across a parking lot.
