Shores and Islands Ohio: Perfect Family Getaway to Lake Erie

Did you know that there are islands in the Midwest? Islands that families travel near and far to vacation on? Road trip to Ohio’s Shores and Islands region and you’ll never look at the Midwest the same again. There are so many things for families to do but here are a few of my favorite places.

South Bass Island, Ohio

As a mom of young kids, I can tell you that South Bass Island is a fantastic summer getaway just under five hours from Indianapolis. The island, nestled in Lake Erie, is easily accessible by ferry (or airplane), whether you bring your car or leave it behind. If you want to bring your vehicle, check out Miller Boat Line, if you’re visiting without your vehicle, check out Jet Express. Many families prefer to rent golf carts once they arrive since parking is a breeze for golf carts compared to the parking available for regular vehicles.

There’s so much to do on the island, from boating, swimming, and fishing to kayaking.

Lake Erie Islands Nature & Wildlife Center

The Lake Erie Islands Nature & Wildlife Center is another favorite spot. Families love visiting the Lake Erie Islands Nature & Wildlife Center. It’s open daily from June to August and on weekends in May and September, making it easy to plan a trip. The prices are great—only $3 for adults and $2 for kids over five and seniors.

The center is fantastic for teaching kids and adult visitors about the local plants and animals, promoting conservation, and exploring the unique ecosystem of the Lake Erie Islands. During the summer, on Wild Tuesdays, regional experts give fascinating talks about everything from snakes to spiders and even the island’s caves. It’s a fun and educational experience for the whole family!

Perry’s Cave Family Fun Center

Families love the underground limestone cave tour filled with stalactites and stalagmites and the Butterfly House is mesmerizing, with over 50 exotic butterflies. The family fun continues with gemstone mining, a maze, miniature golf, rock climbing, and even an antique car museum, complete with an antique car parade!

Bass Island State Park

Even more outdoor experiences await at Bass Island State Park. You can camp with your camper or tent, or try one of their “cabents,” which are like cozy yurts. The picnic area and swimming beach are family favorites, and if you have Waverunners, paddleboards, power boats, or kayaks, bring them along for extra fun on the water.

Put-In-Bay

The village of Put-In-Bay is a charming area of the island that’s a must-visit. It hosts events like the Put-In-Bay Pyrate Fest, Ohio’s Island Wine Festival, Amphicar Days, Bash on the Bay, and even a Halfway to St. Patrick’s Day celebration. There’s something for everyone with great restaurants, entertainment, and boutique shopping.

Don’t miss Perry’s Victory & International Peace Memorial while you’re there. The kids love learning about history, and the view from the top is spectacular, offering sights of the lakeshores of Ohio, Michigan, and Ontario, Canada. The 352-foot monument commemorates the Battle of Lake Erie during the War of 1812 and celebrates lasting peace between Britain, Canada, and the United States.

After all the activities, relax at The Keys, a tropical-themed restaurant and tiki bar right on the water. It’s the perfect spot to enjoy a frozen drink and take in the stunning views of Ohio and the Midwest. There isn’t a more wonderful way to unwind and see this beautiful region from a fresh perspective.

Port Clinton & Sandusky, Ohio

I recommend extending your stay to explore nearby attractions in Sandusky and Port Clinton. A in this area and making a day trip to the Islands might be a better plan depending on your activity preferences.

Cedar Point Amusement Park

Known as the “Roller Coaster Capital of the World,” Cedar Point boasts a variety of world-class rides, from adrenaline-pumping coasters to family-friendly attractions. Located in Sandusky, Ohio, the amusement park also features water rides, live entertainment, and dining options. With stunning views of Lake Erie and over 70 rides, Cedar Point offers a perfect day of fun and excitement for visitors.

Bayfront Resort at Cross View

Bayfront Resort at Cross View is the perfect place for families to stay, with or without children. The luxury RV and cottage resort along the beautiful Sandusky Bay made us feel right at home. We stayed in one of their fully furnished cottages, which sleeps six. It was perfect for us with a bedroom, bunk beds, a loft, a full kitchen, laundry, and a bath.

Kids love the heated pool, and the modern clubhouse is great for family time. The views of Sandusky Bay and Cedar Point are breathtaking, making it an unforgettable family vacation spot that’s less than three miles from Cedar Point and other local family attractions.

The Explorer Rest and Recreation

This renovated and updated motel is a charming place for families, couples, and singles to stay. Just a short drive to all of the local attractions, The Explorer is a cute option with plenty of space and beds for everyone.

Liberty Aviation Museum

If anyone in your crew loves airplanes or history, a visit to the Liberty Aviation Museum in Ohio should be on your list. Located in Port Clinton, the museum’s collection of vintage aircraft and military vehicles will captivate your little ones.

The collection includes a B-25J Mitchell bomber “Georgie’s Gal” and a replica of the 1928 Ford Tri-Motor. The exhibits on World War II and aviation history are both educational and engaging for the kids. You can even enjoy a meal at the Tin Goose Diner, to add a nostalgic touch to your visit. Ask about their airplane rides!

African Safari Wildlife Park

The drive-through safari at the African Safari Wildlife Park is a highlight for all. Kids love seeing and feeding animals like giraffes, zebras, and bison right from the family car. The park also has a walk-through area with exotic animals and engaging educational shows, perfect for curious young minds.

It’s a safe and exciting way for guests to learn about different species up close. Don’t miss the hands-on animal encounters like feeding giraffes, giant tortoises, porcupines, and others offer countless photo opportunities and memorable moments.

We cannot wait to return to the Shores and Islands region of Ohio, I know there’s so much more to explore. Let me know if you’ve visited or if you’re visiting soon. info@indywithkids.com
