I Lost 50 Pounds This Fall and Here’s How I Did It

I know that most of you are going to skip this part and scroll quickly to find the answer you really want, “How did Katy lose 50 pounds?” Don’t worry, I’m not going to sell you something, but I’m going to be very honest with you. I’m not quite ready to share my starting number or even my goal number, but I can tell you that I want to lose 100 pounds total for my first goal. I have a second goal that I’ll be less aggressive with, but as long as my doctor says I can keep going, I’m kicking these 100 pounds out in the most rapid way possible.

You and I both probably know what we’re supposed to do in order to have healthy bodies, stay fit and not get fat. Yeah, I said the “f-word,” FAT. It’s weird because I never really thought of myself as “fat” — I know I’m overweight, but I still see myself as someone very different than how the world sees me. It isn’t until I see side-by-side photos that I can recognize that I’m more than just overweight, I’m exactly what my doctors told me I was during some of my more recent pregnancies…I’m obese.

I’ve always considered myself moderately active — I run around with my kids all day, we play, we walk, we do stuff. But it wasn’t enough. Your input (food) must match your output (movement) to maintain weight and your output must exceed your input to loose weight. Well, I was gaining weight. A LOT of weight.

I joined a group called Monumental Moms and started walking to get ready for the Monumental Marathon 5K. It wasn’t that hard and it was fun. A 5k is something you can do at your own pace and with so many people participating, it’s very likely that you aren’t alone, no matter what your pace is. My neighbors and I started walking around the neighborhood before the kids woke up, a few times a week — until it got too cold.

There’s an app called Gixo and I recommend it! A real life coach guides you through different exercise classes, including walking and 5K training!

Next I had to deal with the food portion of my life. I’ve tried diets and I can’t stick with them. For a new diet to work, it had to “hurt” me where I could measure the value of what I was doing (more on that in a minute). My doctors office offers a medically supervised weight loss program that my husband really wanted to try. He convinced me that we should try it, so after about a year of talking about it, we dove in.

The program consists of weekly support and counseling, meals and supplements, and consistent supervision and care from medical professionals. That means I’m attending weekly group meetings about nutrition, mindfulness and accountability. I’m also having my labs drawn and meeting with my doctor every 30 days. And finally, I’m surviving on a diet of powdered meals that when water is added become puddings, shakes, smoothies and soups.

Here’s the painful part, the money. It’s bad enough that the program I’m on, VLCD (Very Low Calorie Diet) doesn’t allow for any real food to be eaten, but it feels expensive to be in this program. During one of my first few weeks, I only lost one pound in that week and I was so disappointed. I decided that it wasn’t worth the money if I wasn’t going to be losing more than that each week, so I pep talked myself and other than gaining 2 pounds during Christmas week, I have done really well at hitting the 3-5 pounds per week weight loss touted in the brochures.

I started my journey on September 29th, 2018 with a goal of 100 pounds in front of me. On December 22nd I reached my halfway goal with a 50 pound loss in 84 days. After about 2 months of weight loss, my doctor took me off of my blood pressure medication because my blood pressure readings were consistently at a healthy level.

On the program, I consume 800 calories and 40 grams of carbs each day. All of this is done through product. I’m not a huge fan of the flavor and taste of the majority of the products, so if I can do it, you can too! My average weekly cost is $120, but I’m not spending a penny on any other food. If you eat out for 1-2 meals per day, you were already spending this much most likely.
