I’m here to argue that Indianapolis is THE place to be for St. Patrick’s Day celebrations. In addition to the green beer drinking types of events, Indy has a portfolio of family friendly St. Patrick’s traditions. Typically, you’ll find several choices for fun St. Patrick’s Day events that you can bring your kids along. While the Indy St. Patrick’s Day Parade has been canceled for 2021, the Greening of the Canal will be held as a streaming event. As of now, this event is expected to take place Wednesday, March 17 and 8am. You can watch on the official Facebook page.
The Greening of the Canal in Indianapolis
Every year, the Indianapolis canal is dyed green to celebrate the arrival of St. Patrick’s Day in Indy. This year, due to COVID 19, it will take place on St. Patrick’s day in place of the parade.
The 2021 version of the event will not allow for spectators and instead will be streamed. Typically, people of all ages gather to hear live Irish music and watch as dye is poured into the canal to turn the water and the fountain green. The Greening of the Canal is part of a three day celebration that includes the annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade (Friday) and the Shamrock Run & Walk (Saturday). None of these events will be held in person during 2021.
