The Greening of the Canal

Every year, the Indianapolis canal is dyed green to celebrate the arrival of St. Patrick’s Day in Indy. This year, it will take place on Thursday, March 12, 2020.

People of all ages gather to hear live Irish music and watch as dye is poured into the canal to turn the water and the fountain green. It’s all a part of a three day celebration that includes the annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade (Friday) and the Shamrock Run & Walk (Saturday). The Greening of the Canal and the Indianapolis St. Patrick’s Day Parade are free to attend.

In addition to live musical performances and remarks from the Mayor, there will be food trucks on site, serving up dinner and snacks. The official greening of the canal will take place at 5:45pm by the firehouse (near the spot where pedal boat rentals take place).

Grab your kids from the school bus, call your friends and meet up for a fun evening. It all happens at the Ohio Street Canal Basin at Ohio and West Street downtown. Just east of IFD Fire Station #13. Look for street parking and plan on walking in.

Please note that this event is weather dependent.
