I’m here to argue that Indianapolis is THE place to be for St. Patrick’s Day celebrations. In addition to the green beer drinking types of events, Indy has a portfolio of family-friendly St. Patrick’s traditions. Typically, you’ll find several choices for fun St. Patrick’s Day events that you can bring your kids along. The Indy St. Patrick’s Day Parade is coming back for 2022 and the Greening of the Canal will return to a live event in 2022. This event is expected to take place Wednesday, March 16 at 5 pm. The Greening of the Canal will also be streamed live on the official Facebook page.
The Greening of the Canal in Indianapolis
Every year, the Indianapolis canal is dyed green to celebrate the arrival of St. Patrick’s Day in Indy. This year the event returns to the day before the parade, on Wednesday, March 16.
The 2021 version of the event did not allow for spectators and was instead streamed. The return of the live event means that people of all ages can see live Irish music and performers, and watch as the dye is poured into the canal to turn the water and the fountain green. Mayor Joe Hogsett, The 2022 Irish Citizen of the Year, and the Executive Director of the Hoosier Lottery will be the official pourers for this year’s festivities
The Greening of the Canal is part of a three-day celebration that includes the annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade (Thursday, March 17) and the Shamrock Run & Walk (Saturday, March 19). None of these events were held in person during 2021.
