Children’s Pretend Play Area at the Hancock County Public Library

There are 100 reasons why my kids and I love the Hancock County Public Library.  And now after the grand opening of their new pretend play area… there are 101 reasons.  Located on the western edge of Greenfield, Indiana you will find the library and it wonderful children’s area. Besides books, and computers and fantastic story times broken down by age levels and amazing events/workshops their children’s area contains so much more.

First up I’m going to tell you about the newest addition a pretend city for kids to dress up and play in.  There are two store fronts with kid sized entrances.  The first stop is a doctors office with an examination table, toy medicine cabinet, toy defibrillator and toy doctor tools. Kids can dress up in a lab scope, wear a stethoscope around their neck and examine dolls as patients.   I spoke with one of the librarians and they mentioned that these “shops” could be changed out and made into something new by changing the toys and clothes etc.  So the area is sure to stay updated and current.

The next stop is a grocery store with all kinds of toy produce and food.  Shopping baskets and a check out register add to the realness of this area and kids can wear aprons while they stock the shelves.  There is even a toy broom in the corner to pretend clean with.

But besides the little store fronts there is a great open space with small toys, puzzles and board books for kids and parents to enjoy.  There is a nature nook with a view finder to look through and log tables and chairs to sit and play or read at.  Educational displays change out frequently with nature related topics.  There is also a nice sized lego area with lots of play space for LEGO Duplos.  They have the big brick sized LEGO bricks for kids to build a fort with.  And, there is a castle to climb inside and build lego creations in.

The children’s area is separate from the rest of the library so kids are free to play and be themselves.  There is a fish tank and coloring area as well as restrooms and a drinking fountain all in the kids area.  You are sure to have a great time while you are there.

For hours, directions and a list of events check out their website.
