As summer winds down and the school routine settles back in, many families are looking for ways to trade extra screen time for meaningful moments together. One of the easiest ways to reconnect? Family game night!
On this week’s FOX59 segment, I brought a lineup of brand-new and classic board and card games from Gen Con, the world’s largest tabletop gaming convention (and it happens right here in Indianapolis!). These games are smart, silly, and designed for kids and parents to enjoy together. From strategy challenges to laugh-out-loud scavenger hunts, here are my top picks to upgrade your next family night in.
Gnock (Knock with a G!)
Created by two Indianapolis dads, Gnock is a fast-paced card game currently available on Kickstarter. The premise: Gnomes are trying to elect their new ruler, and the lowest hand wins. It’s portable, quick to learn, and easy to play anywhere — even at a restaurant. Fun bonus: some cards have silly actions you have to perform, making the whole table laugh. Gorgeous artwork and local roots make this one to watch.
Wheel of Fortune Electronic Game
Fans of the TV show will love this single-player electronic Wheel of Fortune game that includes sound effects from the iconic program. Players race to solve puzzles in two different game modes, winning game money (not real cash, unfortunately!). It’s fast, familiar, and perfect for word-loving kids and adults.
Neopets Battledome
If your kids love trading card-style play, they’ll be hooked on Neopets Battledome. Based on the beloved virtual pets of the early 2000s, this tabletop trading card game brings nostalgia for parents and fresh fun for kids. Best for two players, it blends imagination, strategy, and stunning artwork.
Fill Your Pants
Sometimes the silliest games are the most memorable. In Fill Your Pants, players literally put on oversized pants and race around the house (or yard) to collect objects from scavenger hunt-style cards. “Something with a handle,” “something fluffy,” or “something you can eat” might be on the list — then you stuff the items in your pants as fast as you can! It’s ridiculously funny, gets the kids moving, and guarantees laughter for the whole family.
One More!
From Ulta Games, One More! challenges players to out-bid each other on how many things they can name in a category — like “Mickey Mouse’s friends” or “Disney songs.” If you say you can name five but fall short, you lose points. The built-in game master keeps everyone on track, and the escalating challenges bring out everyone’s competitive side.
Sixes and Ones
This dice game is small enough to tuck in your purse, making it perfect for restaurants or travel. With six different game variations included, plus a clever cup to roll the dice without scattering, Sixes and Ones is ideal for kids ages 4–11. It’s quick, portable, and full of replay value.
Hello Kitty and Friends: Reach for the Stars
Exclusive to Target, this sweet Sanrio-themed dice game features Hello Kitty and friends as the dice themselves. Players flip over cards, try to match dice positions, and grab stars to earn points. Easy to learn, beautifully designed, and great for young kids — plus it comes in a cute carrying case.
Why Game Night Matters
Whether you’re strategizing in Gnock, giggling through Fill Your Pants, or testing your memory with One More!, family games create moments of connection that stick with kids long after the dice are packed away. They encourage creativity, problem-solving, and teamwork — and most importantly, they’re fun for both kids and parents.
If your family is ready to refresh your game shelf this fall, give one (or more!) of these games a try. You’ll laugh, you’ll bond, and you may just discover a new family tradition.
