Krannert Park

My daughter is obsessed with boats right now. She’s been on a boat before but I doubt she remembers it–but for some reason whenever we see water she looks for a boat. If she sees something in the water and it’s not a duck, it’s a boat. We found out that Krannert Park (westside – 605 S. High School Road, Indianapolis) has a wildlife pond and we were sold!

Krannert Park was home to the YMCA until it was acquired by Indy Parks in the 70’s. There’s a small playground (with a ramp to the equipment) surrounded by mulch. The wildlife pond was a HUGE win with Lulu. There are several docks that extend out onto the water and kids can walk out to observe fish and ducks (or boats). Several families were even fishing off of the docks!

There were hiking trails that led into a beautiful wooded area. Our dog Pixy enjoyed sniffing along there but we didn’t go too far on the trail since Lulu was worn out from running back and forth between the docks. Several covered picnic areas provided pleasant spaces for cookouts and birthday parties (both were popular on the day we visited). In addition to all of these wonderful amenities, you’ll find 4 tennis courts, 2 softball diamonds and a basketball court.

The indoor family center was closed since our visit was on a Sunday but Krannert Family Center offers an indoor pool, weight room and a variety fitness classes throughout the week and on Saturdays.

The outdoor pool (opens Memorial Day Weekend) was colorful and large! A gradual depth play-pool with a play structure looked like a lot of fun, a giant water slide and a lap pool were so inviting on this warm day.
