If your child has ever stopped to watch a construction crew, collected toy trucks, or dreamed of operating an excavator, there is a new indoor play space in Carmel that deserves a spot on your family’s must-visit list. It’s just one of the many things to do in Carmel with kids.
Build It Playground is a construction-themed indoor playground where children can dig, build, haul, create, and explore inside a kid-sized worksite. Instead of simply climbing through a traditional indoor play structure, kids become part of the action. They can operate equipment, experiment with different building materials, and use their imaginations to turn the entire play space into their own construction zone.
Build It Playground is officially open at 1069 3rd Avenue SW in Carmel. The locally built attraction is primarily designed for children ages 1–10, although our recent visit proved that kids at the top of that age range may enjoy it just as much as younger builders.
A Construction Site Built Just for Kids
The first thing families will notice about Build It Playground is its commitment to the construction theme. The space is divided into play areas named The Shop, The Yard, The City, The Pit, The Quarry, and The Heavy Lifters. Each area encourages children to interact with the environment differently.
Kids can visit a miniature construction site, experiment with building tables, dig through sensory materials, operate ride-on excavators, and control remote-controlled construction equipment. The activities are beginner-friendly, so children don’t need any previous experience operating the equipment. Staff members are available to help kids learn how everything works.
This is not the kind of indoor playground where children race through the same slide repeatedly. Build It Playground is centered on open-ended play. A pile of materials can become a road, a tower, a worksite, or an entire city depending on who is doing the building.
That creative element may also help explain why the space appeals to a broader range of ages.
Older Kids May Be Surprised by How Much They Enjoy It
Build It Playground is recommended primarily for children ages 1–10, and families with preschool and early elementary-aged children will likely find plenty to keep their kids engaged.
However, my children are 10 and 11, and they both had such a fun time during our visit.
I wondered whether my 11-year-old might feel a little too old for the experience, but that concern disappeared quickly. The opportunity to operate equipment, control the remote-controlled excavators, and actually accomplish building challenges made the experience feel more interactive than a typical pretend-play space.
The remote-control construction table has particular appeal for older kids. It requires coordination, patience, and concentration as children learn to maneuver the equipment. Build It Playground also welcomes siblings older than 10 for a separate admission option that includes tokens for the remote-control area and excavator rides.
Families bringing children of several ages may find that everyone gravitates toward something different. Younger children can scoop, move, and explore while older kids work on more detailed construction projects or master the controls.
There are even soft-play opportunities for babies younger than one, making Build It Playground an option for families trying to entertain both a baby and an older sibling. Children younger than one are admitted free with a paid sibling.
Admission and Reservations at Build It Construction Playground
Families can choose between a one-hour or two-hour play session.
A 60-minute play session costs $18 per child and is a good option for a first visit or a quick outing. A two-hour session costs $30 per child and gives kids more time to settle into their projects, experiment with the equipment, and revisit their favorite areas. Play packages and monthly memberships are also available for families who plan to return regularly.
One supervising adult is included with each paid child. Additional adults are $4. Walk-ins are welcome, but advance reservations are recommended during potentially busy periods, including weekends and weekday mornings.
Standard admission includes access to the hands-on building areas. Families may purchase tokens separately for ride-on excavators and the remote-control construction table.
Because so many activities encourage kids to begin a project and keep working on it, families may prefer the two-hour session when their schedules allow. Just as your child finishes moving one load of material, another construction idea is likely to appear.
What Families Should Know Before Visiting Build It
All participants must have a completed waiver before playing. Families can fill it out online before arriving to make the check-in process easier. Parents and guardians must remain at Build It Playground and supervise their children throughout the visit.
Children are required to wear grippy socks. Families may bring their own or purchase a pair at the front desk for $3. Adults must also wear socks, although they do not need to be grippy socks. Shoes are not permitted within the play areas.
Outside food and beverages are not allowed, except for water bottles. Build It Playground has a small café serving coffee, hot pizza, and prepackaged food and snacks.
Regular hours are Monday through Saturday from 9 am–6 pm and Sunday from 10 am–5 pm. Families should check directly with Build It Playground before visiting because hours may change for holidays, special events, or private rentals.
Birthday Parties at Build It Playground
Construction-loving kids can also celebrate birthdays at Build It Playground.
Party packages include two hours of playground access, a private construction-themed party room, tables and chairs, basic party supplies, setup and cleanup assistance, and grip socks for the participating children. Basic packages accommodate up to eight children, with the option to add more guests. Party packages begin at $350.
Families interested in a private celebration can also rent the entire facility after regular operating hours. Full-facility rentals include access to all play areas, unlimited excavator and remote-control play, grip socks for guests, and dedicated party hosts.
Put Build It Playground on Your Indoor Fun List
Build It Playground offers something refreshingly different from the usual indoor play experience. Children are not simply burning energy. They are planning, problem-solving, coordinating movements, sharing equipment, and watching their ideas take shape.
The experience is especially well suited for toddlers, preschoolers, and elementary-aged children who love construction vehicles, sensory play, pretend play, or building things. Still, families should not automatically count out children approaching the upper end of the recommended age range.
My 10- and 11-year-olds both had a fantastic time, and the equipment-based activities helped make the visit feel engaging for them.
