Summer is the best time for fresh fruits and veggies in Indianapolis. Sweet strawberries picked from the vine. Fresh and delicious Indiana Tomatoes on a hot summer’s day. Sweet corn in August.
Our family loves to visit our local Farmers’ Market every Saturday. The variety and beauty of local produce is really something to see. It’s colorful and fresh, and you can actually meet many of the farmer’s and their family first-hand. Talk about fresh.
And while we love the Farmers’ Market, some of our favorite produce comes right out of our very own backyard.
Gardening is a great activity to do with your children, and it teaches them to be respectful of food and mealtimes. Understanding that food isn’t just bought, it’s a long labor of love from the seed to the table. We started small, but it wasn’t long before we had a raised bed and lots of veggies all summer long.
So it has me asking, “What’s your favorite way to serve your summer fruits and veggies?”
Do you have a favorite recipe? Do you like them grilled? Do you like in dessert? Maybe au naturel?
The farm families from inside the Glass Barn at the Indiana State Fairgrounds have provided their favorite “fresh from the garden” recipes for our readers. From blackberries to squash; from brownies to salsa; there is so much to choose from! They have even include helpful hints on how to freeze vegetables like corn and broccoli.
And next time you’re worried about your kids eating their vegetables; remember the zucchini cookies!
Hoosier farming families continue working hard to produce the food you and your family enjoy every day. Thank you to our local soybean and corn farmers for sharing their favorite recipes.
