Tie Dye Lab | DIY Tie Dye Creations in Avon

The Tie Dye Lab in Avon is closing its doors later this month, and families across the west side are feeling it. This colorful little studio has been a go-to spot for birthdays, creative outings, rainy days, and projects that kids are truly proud of. If it has been on your list or you have been meaning to go back, now is the time.

This is a final call for one of Central Indiana’s most beloved hands-on experiences. The owners have announced that this is the last season for families to walk in, roll up their sleeves, and create something bright and wearable. With closure coming quickly, many parents are trying to fit in one more visit before the doors are locked for good.

The Tie Dye Lab in Avon

If you have never taken your kids to The Tie Dye Lab, the experience is simple and joyful. Kids walk in and immediately see a wall of colorful shirts. They get to choose their item, pick their colors, and learn folding techniques with the help of friendly staff members. It feels like a big, fun craft project, but it does not come with the stress or mess of tie-dyeing at home.

One of the best parts of visiting during the holiday season is that everything kids make can easily become a gift. A brightly colored hoodie for a sibling, custom socks for grandparents, a pillowcase for a friend. Kids love creating things for people they care about, especially when they get to choose colors and patterns that match someone’s personality. Parents love that it is a handmade gift and not something that will clutter up a closet or get tossed aside. These are usable gifts, and kids are so proud when they give them.

The staff has always been wonderful about helping kids feel confident. They explain each step and offer just enough guidance so even young children can participate. Kids squeeze dye bottles, twist fabric, and talk through their design ideas. It is hands-on, creative, and easy to understand. The process usually takes about an hour, which keeps everyone engaged without feeling rushed.

Once items are dyed and wrapped, they stay behind to soak. Families can play games or color on the chalkboard and then rinse out and press water from their finished creations. This finishing moment is always the highlight. Kids unfold their shirts, and light up when they see how the colors blend together. That feeling of “I made this” is the magic of The Tie Dye Lab.

This season is also a great time to help your kids make their own gift sets. A matching shirt and socks. A set of scrunchies in their friends’ favorite colors. A tote bag for a teacher. Kids put so much thought into their choices, and it becomes a sweet, intentional outing that feels personal. You can even join in and make items alongside them so the whole family gets in on the fun. Matching holiday shirts?

If your family has visited before, this is the moment to go back one more time. Choose the items you loved most or try something new before it disappears. Take photos of your kids choosing colors and squeezing dye because these are the little memories that stand out. The Tie Dye Lab has been a place where parents and kids sit at the same table and create side by side. You do not just drop your kids off. You participate. That shared experience is what made this spot so special for so many families.

With closing day approaching, the studio has been busy. Families are squeezing in final visits, and hours may shift as they begin to wind down. Before you go, check The Tie Dye Lab’s Facebook page for current hours and any unexpected closings or modified schedules. The demand is high right now, and you will want the most accurate information before you load everyone in the car.

If you want to visit, do it soon. Plan an afternoon or a quick weekday trip, choose a few white items, and let your kids create something colorful before this studio disappears. This is your last chance to enjoy one of Avon’s most joyful family activities. When you walk out with your final bundle of tie-dye projects, you will be glad you made time to go before the doors close for good.

How To at the Tie Dye Lab

  • Choose the item you’d like to dye
  • Select your colors from the examples on the wall
  • Decide what pattern of tie dye you want to create
  • Then the fun begins! Create your designs using the rubber bands at the tie station.
  • From there, head to the dye station and use your squirt bottles to apply the color where you want it.
  • Afterwards, your item is treated to a special ten minute process while you wait. During your wait time you can play games in the spacious waiting area.
  • When your shirt is ready, you’ll head to the sink and rinse it out and then roll it to squeeze any excess liquid out.
  • From there, pose for a photo at the social media wall and then your dyed item is place in a plastic bag with some detergent to use at home.
  • Once you are at home, wash your item in the washing machine, dry it and then wear it!

It’s a very easy, stress-free activity. My children, age 2, 5 and 7 loved making their own designs. My two year old needed a little bit of assistance from me, my older kids needed only some guidance as they prepared their shirt with the ties (rubber bands) into the design they selected.

Tie Dye Lab has some great transfers they can affix to your shirt so you can represent your favorite local school or team. Seasonal transfers are available too.
