Think Fortville for Family Friendly Fun this Fall

FortvilleTour_Indulgebloggers

My family has called Fortville home for close to ten years.  While I know it is a great town to live in,  I was happy to make some new discoveries about this town and learn even more of what it has to offer when we were given a taste of Fortville during the course of a progressive tour, thoughtfully arranged for us by the Fortville Mama blog.  My family and I, along with other local bloggers, recently toured this quaint town located just outside of Indianapolis in western Hancock county.

Java Junction

FortvilleTour_JavaJunctionscheduleThe first stop on our progressive tour was 222 S. Main Street, the home of Java Junction and Indy Block Party.  Welcomed from the front door with a sign promising you’ll leave “as friends”, Java Junction is larger on the inside than it would appear, housing a gym, an arcade, a coffee house, and three unique party rooms yet the atmosphere within is cozy and casual.

We were treated to some delicious coffee and baked goods while the kids enjoyed the bounce house and retro arcade games and marveled at the fairy gardens display from Brawners Greenhouse, another Fortville gem.

A cool coffee house atmosphere for the grown ups and a fun place for the kids to play is always a nice combination in this mama’s book and Java Junction has both. With delicious coffee and baked goods, you can see why local families love to hang out here.

Java Junction Highlight:  FREE bounce house for kids from 4 – 6pm on Tuesdays (must be accompanied by an adult) and don’t miss the German chocolate cake coffee, it is delicious!

Indulge

FortvilleTour_Indulge_sweetsmenuThe second stop on our tour was a family favorite: Indulge.  This ice cream parlor and cafe is located at 10 S. Main Street and has already received high marks from Indy With Kids.  My family and I discovered the famous Pink Elephant sundae this summer and it was love at first bite.

Their signature food offerings are delicious and the menu prices are pretty sweet, too.  Be sure to check the facebook page to find out what the specials are before you go, as the menu rotates from day to day.  There’s always something delicious being served up.

On Wednesday nights the town of Fortville has a classic car cruise in.  The mix of these vintage wheels and the atmosphere of Indulge is like stepping into a very cool time machine, even if it means your wait at the counter might be a little bit longer.  The staff is friendly and the decor is whimsical and fun and the serving sizes live up to the name indulgent.

Indulge Highlight:  the famous Pink Elephant ice cream sundae, a sweet bargain at $6.  Bring the whole family (and maybe a few friends) to enjoy this giant pink treat.

Ten West Center for the Arts

Our next destination was the Ten West Center for the Arts located on 10W. Church Street.  As their motto says, Ten West is “a place for youth and the arts to thrive” and this completely volunteer run organization is great asset to the local community.

From Indy ArtVenture classes to Accented Motions Dance Studio to the Ten West Theater/Choir, there’s a little something for every child’s artistic interest and Ten West works to keep the prices of these experiences affordable for families.

Be sure to mark your calendars for these upcoming Ten West events:

– September 27, 7PM Friday Night Magic with magician Dan Dygert (tickets are $5 and $7)

– October 25, 5:30 PM Fortville Spooktacular

Piney Acres Farm

FortvilleTour_PineyAcresOur final stop on the tour took us just outside of town to 1115 E. 1000N, to Piney Acres Farm.   Owned by Rex and Janice Zenor, the Piney Acres motto is to “let kids dig in, play in the dirt, have fun and learn in the process.”

Piney Acres has a lot to offer families during the upcoming months. Beginning in September, families will find hay rides, bonfires, and a challenging corn maze.  When the calendar turns to October, be ready for the pumpkin patch and the Haunted Loft (if you dare!).

And, during the holiday season, families can enjoy a wagon ride through the 73 acres of Christmas trees to pick the tree of their choice (you pick the tree, Piney Acres does the rest).

Piney Acres Highlight:  this year the farm is excited for their biggest and best Pumpkin Patch ever, opening from September 21 to October 31 (prices starting $3 and up).

Fortville Winterfest

While you’re marking your calendars for family fun in Fortville, be sure to not to miss the Fortville Winterfest on December 7, 2013.  Main Street in Fortville turns into a Winter wonderland with horse-drawn wagon rides, costumed characters, holiday music and carolers, a Snowflake Princess crowning, and plenty of cocoa and good food.  Santa Claus will even be there as the town’s special guest.

If you’re looking for family friendly fun in a small town atmosphere (and at a small town price) then put Fortville on your “must see” list of Indiana places.
