Donut Making for Kids | Jack’s Donuts Carmel

Did you know that Jack’s Donuts in Carmel offers kids donut-making sessions? That’s right, your child and their friends can spend the morning learning about donut making—rolling out dough, cutting donut holes, and decorating donuts with frosting and sprinkles. Since I brought my son to do this a year and a half ago, he has asked at least monthly when we get to do it again. It’s always a fun time when the kids get to go behind the scenes, create with their hands, and of course taste their masterpieces!

Jack’s Donuts offers donut making sessions for groups of 6-15 kids. All you have to do is call and make a reservation. It is $10 per child which includes a drink (juices and regular, chocolate, or strawberry milk), a large donut to decorate and devour, and to-go bag with a dozen donut holes!

To make a reservation, you can either call the store at (317) 993-3501 or send them a message on Facebook. They offer sessions Mondays-Wednesdays betweeen 10:30 am and 2 pm. Each person just pays when they arrive so it’s not hard to coordinate. You can bring along little siblings. Children 2 and up will get the most out of the experience, but my 21 month old participated and loved throwing the dough onto the rack and putting sprinkles on… everything!

When you first arrive, they already have everything set up and the children can choose which tiny aprons they want to wear. The staff member guiding the session talks about donut making then takes all of the children back to the kitchen which is something they don’t get to do often! She shows them the huge mixer and the giant packages of dough. Then, two-by-two, the children stand on crates for their turn. They get to choose regular or chocolate dough, sprinkle flour on their piece, roll out the dough with a giant rolling pin, and can choose to make regular sized cut outs or little donut holes. They almost always choose donut holes! Then she shows them how to grab their cut outs and toss them onto the baking rack.

After each child gets a turn and washes their hands, they go back to the front of the shop to start decorating their own donuts. Each child gets a large plain donut, a cup full of frosting, a cup full of sprinkles, and a plastic knife. They also each receive a drink which is included in the price per child. The kids love decorating and licking the frosting and taking bites while working. They get to do this next to all of their friends and nobody’s house takes a hit!

The whole experience lasts about an hour but you are welcome to stay and enjoy more donuts or coffee. There is a children’s area with a chalkboard wall where they can play. There are comfortable couches next to it as well as a unisex bathroom. When you are ready to leave, there is a baggie of a dozen donut holes for each child to take home. You can tell your kids they made them, but in reality they don’t actually use what the kids touch!

You can find more information on their Facebook page at Jack’s Donuts of Carmel or at www.jacksdonuts.com. If there is another Jack’s Donuts closer to you, try calling them first to see if they offer sessions as well.
