If you’re looking for the perfect spot to treat your kids, cool off on a summer afternoon, celebrate something big (or small), or enjoy time together without screens, Moo & Lou Frozen Treats is one of the sweetest places in Indianapolis to do it. This bright, cheerful Indianapolis ice cream shop has quickly become a family favorite—not just because the ice cream is delicious (it is), but because the entire mission of the shop is rooted in kindness, inclusion, and celebrating the joy of childhood.
When you walk through the doors of Moo & Lou in Lawrence, you immediately feel it: this is a place built for families. It’s a place where kids can be messy, imaginative, excited, and loud in their happiness without anyone batting an eye. This is the kind of location where the atmosphere feels just as good as the ice cream tastes.
Here’s what it’s like to take your kids to Moo & Lou, what to order, what to expect, and what makes this Indy ice cream shop such a special part of any family adventure.
Moo & Lou Ice Cream: Bright, Fun, Flavorful, and Totally Kid-Approved
Let’s start with the star of the show: the ice cream. Moo & Lou is known for big flavors, vibrant colors, and scoop combinations that are joyful, whimsical, and made specifically for kids and the adults who want in on the fun.
Depending on the season, you’ll find playful, creative flavors kids immediately gravitate toward. Think birthday cake confetti, cookie overload, swirls of color, and rich, creamy classics done incredibly well. Moo & Lou also offers dairy-free options and lighter choices so everyone in the family can enjoy a treat.
The portions are generous, the cones are fresh, and the toppings bar is basically a dream come true if your kid loves choosing allllll the extras. (Mine want gummy bears, sprinkles, cookie chunks, AND whipped cream…Moo & Lou makes it work.)
The best part? Moo & Lou ice cream tastes like childhood joy, like summer nights with bare feet and sticky hands, like celebrations after soccer games, like the kind of treat that becomes part of your family memories.
Really, it’s hard to say what my kids liked the best about Moo & Lou. Our course, there’s the ice cream and other sweet treats, but then there’s the shelf full of games and toys, and the table of craft projects for Maddie Smiles. The shop itself is so colorful and so cute, with comfy seating areas that are so inviting for kids, teens, and their parents. Everyone just felt so at home.
The Mission: Ice Cream With Heart
Moo & Lou is more than an ice cream shop; it’s a mission-driven space filled with purpose. The owners built the shop with a goal to bring families together, create a welcoming environment for kids of all abilities, and make sure every child feels seen, valued, and included. Named after their two daughters, Maddie (Moo) and Lacy (Lou), Moo & Lou has a charitable side that focuses on random acts of kindness in honor of their daughter Maddie (Moo), who passed away as a teen. You’ll see this reflected in signage on the front of the building, offering “Smiles” and inside the shop in meaningful spaces, like a fun crafting area for the kids.
Everything about Moo & Lou’s brand reflects that intention.
From the playful name to the bright colors to the friendly staff who talk directly to your kids and make them feel important, the whole experience communicates: You belong here.
For parents, this is huge. So many places can feel overstimulating, rushed, or not kid-friendly. Moo & Lou feels like the opposite: calm enough for little ones, exciting enough for big kids, joyful enough to lift everyone’s mood.
The shop also partners with local organizations and participates in community events throughout Indianapolis. Buying ice cream here feels like supporting something meaningful.
From one parent to another, Moo & Lou is the kind of place that just works for families.
First, it’s easy.
Kids melt down? Ice cream fixes everything.
Need a bribe for good behavior at Target? Moo & Lou.
Want a family treat after the playground? Moo & Lou.
Just craving something sweet? Yep. Moo & Lou.
Second, it’s comfortable.
You know those places where the minute you walk in with your kids, you feel like you’re too loud, too chaotic, too “family-ish”?
This is NOT one of those places.
Kids are welcome to be silly, curious, talkative, and excited. No one expects them to sit perfectly still or whisper. And that makes the whole outing so much more enjoyable for parents, too.
Finally, it’s memorable.
Our whole family went to Moo & Lou one night after dinner as a surprise, and we had so much fun. The way my kids all sat together, legs swinging off the chairs, comparing flavors and laughing at each other’s sprinkle toppings, playing board games provided by the shop, giggling at the art on the walls… those are the memories I want more of.
Things to Do Nearby for a Full Family Adventure
One of the best parts about Moo & Lou is that it’s easy to pair with other fun activities in the Lawrence area.
Play at a nearby splash pad or neighborhood park and cool off with a cone afterward.
Turn it into a treat after a library adventure.
Check out the Musical Swings.
Use Moo & Lou as a reward after errands—my kids walk a little faster when they know ice cream is coming.
Plan a little “family date night” with dinner nearby and ice cream for dessert.
Visit after a hike at Fort Harrison State Park.
There’s something magical about combining an outing with a sweet treat; it wraps the whole day up in joy.
