Spring and summer days beg for you to get out an fly a kite! Apparently there’s even a National Kite Flying Month (April!) Who knew? Well, now that you do here are some of the best places in the Indy area to fly that kite!
Hands down my favorite place for outdoor meandering is the 100 Acres Art Park at Newfields. The name says it all…plenty of space here to fly a kite. The American Legion Mall downtown is also a nice open area in the middle of the city and perfect for kite flying.
When looking to fly a kite in a park the ideal space is an empty sports field. Some good options inside the loop are Broad Ripple Park, Riverwood Park, Sahm Park, or Garfield Park. Garfield Park has many beautiful areas to explore, Riverwood is not huge but has a decent space for a beginning kite flyer, and the fields at Broad Ripple and Sahm park offer plenty of space to run.
In the north suburbs check out West Park in Carmel. The big hill in the concert area is perfect for getting a running start. The fields at Holland Park in Fishers and Mulberry Fields in Zionsville allow space for a family to fly together. On the south side look for an open area of the giant Southwestway Park which is rich in green space. Eagle Creek Park on the west side and Ft. Harrison State Park to the east have small admission prices but make up for it in amenities, size, and a variety of spaces from which to choose.
If kite flying is more than a yearly occurrence for your family check out the Hoosier Kiteflyers Society which offers workshops and demonstrations throughout Indiana.
