Spencer Farm has always been a popular place for families to visit for a morning of strawberry picking in their large you-pick fields. Over the years, raspberry, asparagus, sunflower, and grape picking were added to the you-pick options. Now, adults can enjoy the fruits of the farm at the Spencer Farm Winery located right on the Spencer Farm property.
Spencer Farm
Spencer Farm strawberry picking has grown to be such a popular summer activity, that often there are days that berries cannot be picked because they need time to ripen. If you catch them on a good day, you will have a ton of fun walking through the rows of strawberry fields picking large, red, delicious strawberries. They may be pricey but they are worth it! The strawberries are absolutely delicious! We always end our trip with a stop at the market to pick up fresh produce, pies, meats, and ice cream, of course!
In addition to fruits and vegetables, there are giant mums you can dig out of the ground yourself to bring home. In October, come for a hayride to pick out your pumpkin! Recently, families have enjoyed visiting Spencer Farm to select a live Christmas tree for their homes in the winter.
Spencer Farm Winery
An 1883 farmhouse sits in front of the Spencer Farm property, right along the road. It may have gone unnoticed for decades by the thousands of visitors, but there’s no ignoring it now. The beautiful farmhouse has been restored and transformed into the newest Indiana winery to hit the trail. Vineyards seemingly popped up overnight and currently surround the home and the parking lot.
Spencer Farm Winery offers a full tasting room and store inside the farmhouse. But you’ll probably want to take your glass to enjoy outdoors on their vast grounds and seating areas. Listen to live music, snack on Amish country cheese and Smoking Goods meats, and enjoy the serene environment with friends and family. Yes, Spencer Farm Winery is family-friendly. The kids will love playing outside on a nice summer evening.
Inside the Farmhouse
A beautiful indoor area welcomes guests of all ages for games and “family wine,” a cup of grape juice. Adults gather around a tasting counter and lounge in the front window as they enjoy the red wines, white wines, and fruit wines that bring the Spencer Farm fruit-picking experience full circle.
Sample a Wine Flight or 5-Pour Tasting
The wine selection includes red wines (Cabernet Sauvignon, Marechal Foch, Chambourcin, Noiret, and Marquette) and white & fruit wines (Pinot Grigio, La Crescent, Farm Dog, Cayuga White, Catawba Rose, Seyval blanc, Strawberry, Sauvignon Blanc, Traminette, Peach & Honey, and Cranberry).
A 5-pour wine tasting experience is $10 per person. Each pour is one ounce and the tasting glass is yours to keep. You can instead opt for a wine flight of four 3-ounce pours of your choice. Wine can also be purchased by the glass (average $6) or the bottle (average $20). Enjoy your wine inside the farmhouse, out on the patio, in the yard, or take it home.
Snacks to Pair With Wine
Charcuterie boards are available at Spencer Farm Winery and pair beautifully with wine. Choose from a menu of Smoking Goose Meats, Amish country cheeses, crackers, almonds, jams, and mustards to decorate a wooden board for a perfectly paired charcuterie experience.
The highest quality meats made locally in Indianapolis from Smoking Goose Meatery include Genoa Salame, Salame Felino, Salame Piccante, Salame Toscano, and Rosette De Lyon. Amish Country cheeses (Sharp Cheddar, Jalapeno Muenster, Smoked Gouda, Bruschetta Jack, and Horseradish Cheddar) are made by the largest Amish community in the world with milk from Amish farms in Shipshewana, IN and Ohio. Spencer Farm’s own preserves and mustard can be added to the line-up, as well as crackers and almonds.
Bring the Family
The big question for most of our readers is always, “Can we take our kids?” Yes, children are welcome at Spencer Farm Winery. There are non-alcoholic beverages for sale including grape juice, coined as “family wine.” There are restrooms and even a nice stack of family-friendly board games! They’ll just love playing outside with the vineyards, berry fields, and flowers behind them. Don’t forget your pups! Spencer Farm Winery is dog-friendly.
