We’re all about food and snacks in our house. ALL.DAY.LONG. My kids love to head out to our garden during the summer and snack right from the plants we’re growing. We’ve found that when our kids actually, literally, “pick” their own food, they tend to make healthy choices; carrots, berries, lettuce, tomatoes, apples…
Even if you don’t have a garden of your own, there are places you can pick your own food. Be sure to call in advance to be sure that processes and hours are the same. Some of these gardens/farms allow you to purchase the food that you pick and others are volunteer opportunities and the food is sold in a farm store or to nearby restaurants.
The Chase Near Eastside Legacy Center (727 N Oriental) has a u-pick farm operated by Growing Places Indy (opening for the 2015 season on June 18).
Distelrath Urban Farm allows self guided tours on Saturdays. Sometimes visitors will have opportunities to help with harvesting food, feeding animals and collecting eggs.
During the month of June, grab a basket and hit the fields for strawberry picking. You’ll also find that many of these locations offer other u-pick produce. Here are our favorite places to go strawberry picking.
Apple orchards near Indianapolis are plentiful! Apple picking starts in mid summer and goes right through fall.
Tyner Pond Farm will host family visits to the farm and encourages people to come out and visit.
If all else fails, you can find a great Indianapolis area Farmers’ Market nearby.
