Summertime means grilling, ice cream, swimming, and best of all FRESH STRAWBERRIES! I mean all the fresh fruits and vegetables, but especially the Indiana-grown strawberries, tomatoes, and corn.
Every year since I was a little kid, we’ve picked our own strawberries. It’s something I loved to do as a kid, and I want my kids to enjoy it too. We often come home with a ton of strawberries. Most we eat immediately or give away. I always have high hopes to make strawberry preserves or something else exciting, but the most exotic we’ve ever done is made ice cream–that recipe is below!
But when I really stopped to think about how many things to do with strawberries, I found there are so many options and varieties. You can do jam, or dessert, but you can also use them to garnish your drink or add some sweetness to your salad.
Strawberry Picking Tips
I don’t know a lot about picking strawberries except that I can’t wait to eat them when I get home. Did you even know that strawberries will not ripen off the vine? I didn’t. It’s best to leave strawberries with any white spots on the vine so they can continue to ripen. Also, you can freeze your strawberries if you wash and hull them first. This is great advice because it’s sometimes hard to eat all those berries you picked within 3-4 days.
